Japan: Visa Requirements
Visa requirements may change. Always verify the latest information through official government sources.
Visa-Free Entry Requirements
- For visa-free entry, the traveler must carry a valid passport or a travel document accepted under the relevant exemption arrangement. There is no general six-month passport validity requirement imposed by Japan on all travelers. A standard passport must be valid for the entire period to be spent in Japan. Different validity conditions may apply to non-standard documents such as a temporary passport, emergency travel document, refugee travel document, or re-entry permit, and confirmation must be obtained from the competent Japanese mission before travel.
- The common number of blank pages required in a passport is not expressly specified in the central official source.
- Some visa exemption arrangements require a biometric passport compliant with ICAO standards or a machine-readable passport. In some specific arrangements, the passport must be registered with a Japanese diplomatic mission before travel. These conditions vary depending on the type of passport used and the applicable exemption arrangement.
- Visa-free entry may be used for tourism, business meetings, conferences, family or friend visits, and similar short-term purposes under temporary visitor status. It does not permit income-generating or paid activities in Japan.
- The permitted duration of stay may be 15, 30, or 90 days depending on the applicable exemption arrangement. Although longer periods may be available under certain special bilateral arrangements, for stays longer than 90 days, an application for extension must be made to the immigration authority before the permitted period expires. The traveler's exact duration of stay is indicated in the landing permission granted at the border.
- The traveler must undergo immigration inspection upon arrival in Japan. Valid passport, purpose of travel, and planned duration of stay are checked. Visa exemption does not automatically guarantee the right of entry. A traveler deemed not to meet the entry requirements may be denied admission to the country.
- From the vast majority of foreign travelers, two index finger fingerprints and a facial photograph are taken at the border. Minors under sixteen years of age and holders of special status specified in the legislation are exempt from this obligation.
- Immigration and customs information can be registered online before travel via Visit Japan Web. This service is not an electronic travel authorization or visa and does not replace a valid passport or border inspection.
- A return ticket, hotel reservation, bank statement, or a specific minimum financial amount that is uniformly mandatory for all visa-exempt travelers is not expressly specified in the central official source. The border officer may request a travel itinerary, accommodation details, return or onward travel arrangement, and proof of financial sufficiency to verify the purpose of travel and conditions of stay.
- International travel health insurance is strongly recommended. A common requirement or minimum insurance coverage amount for all visa-exempt travelers is not expressly specified in the central official source.
- A general vaccination certificate or medical report requirement applied to all short-term visa-exempt travelers is not expressly specified in the central official source.
- A common list of birth certificate, parental consent, or custody document that is valid for all minor visa-exempt travelers in all cases is not expressly specified in the central official source. If the child travels alone or with only one parent, the carrier, border authority, or transit countries may request additional documents.
E-Visa Application Requirements
- JAPAN eVISA can only be used for a single-entry visa issued for short-term tourist travel. eVISA applications cannot be made for family or friend visits, commercial activity, employment, study, long-term stay, or transit purposes.
- Eligibility to apply varies according to the applicant's nationality, country of residence, passport type, and the Japanese diplomatic mission where the application will be made. Some applications can be made directly through a personal account, while others can only be made through an authorized travel agency.
- The applicant may only use a regular passport. Diplomatic, official, or other special passport types are not accepted for the JAPAN eVISA personal application system.
- The applicant must be present in the country of residence where the application is made throughout the application process. The person may be summoned to the competent Japanese mission for an interview or document verification if necessary.
- A JAPAN eVISA account must be created with a valid email address for the application. Personal information, passport details, residence details, travel dates, means of transportation, accommodation address in Japan, occupation, travel history, and security questions must be filled in completely and accurately on the system.
- The first step of the application system generates a personalized document list after nationality, country of residence, purpose of travel, and competent mission are selected. In addition to this list, the applicant must also follow the local document instructions of the relevant embassy or consulate. There is no universal list of supporting documents applicable to all applicants.
- The passport's personal information page with photograph must be uploaded. The file may be in PDF, TIF, JPG, PNG, GIF, BMP, or HEIC format. It is recommended that the file size not exceed 2 MB and that the resolution be at least 640 × 480 pixels. The scan must be a single page, include the entire machine-readable zone of the passport, and this section must appear clear, flat, and in the correct orientation.
- The passport must be valid on the date of arrival in Japan. There is no general six-month validity requirement. Travel must be made with the passport used during the application. If the passport changes, the eVISA cannot be transferred to the new passport and a new application is required.
- Since the eVISA is issued electronically and no visa sticker is affixed to the passport, a common blank passport page requirement has not been published for the application stage. The exact number of blank pages required for border procedures is not expressly specified in the central official source.
- The facial photograph must have been taken within the last six months, have a plain and pattern-free background, and the entire face must be clearly visible and horizontally centered. The photo may be uploaded in JPG, PNG, GIF, BMP, or HEIC format, and it is recommended that the file size not exceed 2 MB. The exact millimeter dimensions and mandatory background color of the photo are not expressly specified in the central eVISA source.
- Supporting documents may be uploaded in PDF, TIF, JPG, PNG, GIF, BMP, or HEIC format. It is recommended that the file size not exceed 2 MB, and a maximum of 50 pages may be used in one upload area. If multiple documents need to be uploaded into the same field, the documents must be combined into a single PDF file.
- It is not mandatory to purchase a confirmed and paid airplane or ship ticket. The flight or ship travel itinerary created during the reservation process may be uploaded. Travel dates, points of arrival and departure, and transportation information must be clearly visible.
- Hotel reservation, how many months the bank statement should cover, minimum account balance, employment certificate, payslip, travel health insurance, and minimum insurance coverage are not established as common requirements for all eVISA applications in the central source. The personalized document list and the instructions of the competent mission must be followed.
- Family members may apply together with the same itinerary and same arrival and departure dates. Separate personal information, passport data, photo, and required documents must be uploaded for each family member. A marriage or birth certificate may be requested to prove the family relationship. The same bank statement may be used to support the financial sufficiency of family members in some cases; acceptance conditions depend on the relevant mission.
- A parent or legal representative may apply on behalf of a minor child. If the child travels without a person with parental authority, a parental consent document must be uploaded.
- A third party may process on behalf of the applicant. In this case, the representative must indicate themselves as an agent in the application and upload a power of attorney letter. After the electronic visa is issued, the Visa Issuance Notice with a QR code must be given to the traveler.
- The application can be made no earlier than three months before the planned travel date. There is no expedited processing service.
- The standard processing time for complete applications is five business days from the competent Japanese mission's full receipt of the file. Processing may take longer than one month when there is congestion, document verification, interview, additional information, or review by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Tokyo.
- The competent mission may request additional documents, explanations, document verification, or an in-person interview. Incomplete, incorrect, or unsuitable applications may be cancelled without processing, and a new application may be required.
- For single-entry visa applications accepted on or after July 1, 2026, the central general fee is approximately equivalent to 15,000 Japanese yen. The exact fee is determined in local currency based on the applicant's nationality, purpose of travel, reciprocity arrangements, and fee exemptions. The payment amount is shown in the official fee notice sent in the JAPAN eVISA account.
- The eVISA fee can only be paid by online credit card. Cash payment is not accepted. As a rule, the credit card must belong to the applicant. In justified cases such as a minor applicant, the legal representative's card may be accepted. The fee is not refundable after the visa is issued.
- The eVISA is valid for three months from the date of issuance and may be used for a single entry to Japan. The validity period cannot be extended. The duration of stay to be granted may be 15, 30, or 90 days according to the application information and travel plan.
- The eVISA may be used for travel by air or by scheduled international passenger ferries operating only between Japan and certain foreign ports.
- The traveler must present the current Visa Issuance Notice at the departure airport or port via an internet-connected phone or tablet. PDF file, screenshot, or printed copy is not accepted. A person who does not have a suitable device capable of connecting to the internet must apply for a paper visa.
- The eVISA holder is also subject to immigration inspection upon arrival in Japan. Passport, purpose of travel, and planned duration of stay are checked; fingerprints and a facial photograph may be taken as part of general biometric procedures. The eVISA does not guarantee entry into the country.
Consular Visa Application Requirements
- A consular visa must be applied for at the competent embassy, consulate-general, or consular office of Japan in the applicant's place of residence. Depending on local practice, the application may be accepted in person, through an authorized representative, accredited travel agency, or official visa application center. An entry visa application cannot be made from within Japan.
- The application is normally made in the country of which the applicant is a national or where they legally reside. If applying outside the country of nationality, a valid residence permit or proof of legal residence may be requested. The type of document accepted and the remaining validity period vary according to the mission applied to.
- The applicant must have a valid passport and the right to return to the country of nationality or residence. Japan does not apply a common six-month validity requirement to all standard passports; the passport must be valid at least for the duration of the planned travel to Japan. Different periods and document requirements may apply for a temporary passport, emergency travel document, refugee travel document, or re-entry permit.
- The passport must have sufficient space for the visa sticker to be placed. The exact number of blank pages applied to all applications is not expressly specified in the central official source. Some embassies and consulates may locally require one or two blank visa pages.
- The official visa application form must be completed in full, dated, and signed by the applicant. The form can be filled in on a computer and printed. Whether an electronic or typewritten signature is accepted varies according to the mission applied to; some missions request a handwritten signature.
- The application form must provide names as written in the passport, other or previous names, date of birth, nationality, government-issued identification number, marital status, passport type and number, passport issue and expiry dates, purpose of travel, planned duration of stay, port of entry, means of transportation, accommodation in Japan, residential address, occupation, employer, previous travel to Japan, inviting person, guarantor, and information regarding criminal or immigration history.
- The central short-term single-entry visa checklist requires one application form and one photograph. For some nationalities or application locations, two forms and two photographs may be requested.
- The photo area on the paper application form is 45 × 35 millimeters. The photograph must have been taken within the last six months. The common background color, print type, and other technical details are not expressly specified in the central source for all missions; the photo instructions of the mission applied to must be followed.
- Which pages of the passport photocopy are to be submitted varies according to the mission applied to and the visa type. The central short-term checklist does not mandate copying of all passport pages as a common requirement. Some missions may request only the personal information page, while others may also request previous visas and entry stamps.
- For a short-term tourist visa application, the following are submitted: a valid passport, application form, photograph, a transportation itinerary showing arrival and departure dates to/from Japan and flight or ship numbers, financial documents demonstrating that travel expenses can be covered, and a daily travel itinerary in Japan.
- Financial sufficiency can be evidenced by documents such as an income certificate, tax return, bank statement, or bank balance certificate. A common bank statement period and minimum account balance applicable to all applicants are not expressly specified in the central official source.
- It is not mandatory for airplane, ship, hotel, or domestic transportation reservations to be purchased and paid for in the central short-term application. The travel itinerary must include arrival and departure dates, flight details if known, the name, full address and telephone number of the hotel or person to be stayed with, and daily activities.
- For a short-term business visa application, a travel order issued by the employer, employer letter or equivalent document, and an employment certificate may be requested. The inviting organization in Japan may submit a commercial contract, meeting or conference document, invitation letter, list of applicants, and Japan travel itinerary.
- For a family or friend visit application, depending on the nature of the relationship, a birth certificate, marriage certificate, family register certificate, joint photographs, emails, phone call records, or letters may be submitted.
- The invitation letter must be addressed to the Ambassador or Consul General of Japan, explain the planned activities in detail, and not be limited to general statements. The inviting person's name, address, and telephone number, and the applicant's full name in Latin letters as in the passport must be included. The purpose and background of the invitation and the relationship between the parties must be explained.
- If the travel expenses are covered by a guarantor in Japan, a guarantee letter and proof of the guarantor's financial sufficiency are submitted. The most recent income or taxation document, tax return, or bank balance certificate may be used as financial evidence. From a foreign guarantor in Japan, the front and back of the valid residence card, certificate of residence, and a copy of the passport may be requested.
- In case of a company or organization guarantee, a company registration record or organization introduction document may be required. Listed companies may use certain corporate reports. The individual guarantor's employment certificate may be accepted in place of the company registration document in some cases.
- Copies of invitation, guarantee, and corporate documents prepared in Japan may be accepted; however, the mission may request originals for detailed verification. These documents issued in Japan must normally have been prepared within the last three months and be valid on the date of application.
- Whether the application documents require translation into English or Japanese, notarization, legalization, or apostille varies according to the type of document, the country of issuance, and the mission applied to. A common translation, notarization, or apostille rule applied to all consular visa applications is not expressly specified in the central official source.
- For employment, study, family reunification, or stays longer than 90 days, as a rule, the sponsor or accepting organization in Japan must first obtain a Certificate of Eligibility from the Immigration Services Agency. The application includes a passport, visa form, photograph, and the original or copy of the Certificate of Eligibility, or a printed copy of the electronic document. Depending on the visa type, an employment contract, school acceptance, documents showing family relationship, and other supporting documents may be required.
- A Certificate of Eligibility does not guarantee visa issuance or entry into Japan. Long-term visa application without a Certificate of Eligibility may be possible; however, more extensive documents are required, and review may normally take one to three months.
- For certain nationalities and medium- or long-term stay statuses, a TB Clearance Certificate from a panel clinic authorized by the Japanese government showing no active tuberculosis may be required. The start date of the application, exemptions, and whether the document is submitted at the Certificate of Eligibility or visa stage vary according to nationality, place of residence, and status. Temporary visitors are generally not included in this screening under medium- and long-term residence.
- A separate application and passport are required for minors. Who signs the application form, and whether a birth certificate, parental consent, custody document, or copies of parent passports are required varies according to the mission applied to and the child's travel arrangement. A common list of documents for all children is not expressly specified in the central official source.
- No common central rule mandating the provision of fingerprints or application biometrics for all consular visas has been published. The applicant may be called for an interview and additional documents or explanations may be requested. General border biometrics are applied upon arrival in Japan.
- For applications accepted by diplomatic missions on or after July 1, 2026, the central fee is approximately equivalent to 15,000 Japanese yen for a single-entry visa and approximately 30,000 Japanese yen for a multiple-entry visa. The fee is collected in local currency. The fee may differ or be fully waived depending on nationality, purpose of travel, and reciprocity arrangements.
- The payment method varies according to the embassy, consulate, or application center applied to. Cash, bank check, credit card, or other local methods may be applicable. An authorized agency or visa application center may charge an additional service fee. If the visa is not issued, the Japan visa fee is not charged; refund conditions for agency service fees may be separate.
- A common earliest application date for all paper visa types is not expressly specified in the central official source. Many missions accept the application no more than three months before the planned travel due to the three-month validity of the single-entry visa. The local application timeline of the competent mission must be taken as a basis.
- The standard processing time for a complete visa application with no issues is five business days from the day following the date of submission. Processing may take longer than one month in cases of congestion or when consultation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Tokyo is required. There is no guarantee of expedited processing.
- A single-entry visa must normally be used for entry to Japan within three months from the date of issuance, and the validity period cannot be extended. Multiple-entry visas may be valid for one to five years depending on the applicant's situation and visa type. The exact number of entries, validity period, and permitted stay per visit are indicated on the visa sticker.
- The validity period on the visa sticker is not the duration of stay permitted in Japan. The legal duration of stay and permitted activities in Japan are specified in the landing permission granted at the border. For short-term visits, the stay may be a maximum of 90 days; for long-term statuses, the period varies according to the visa and residence category.
- International travel health insurance is strongly recommended. A common insurance requirement or minimum coverage amount for all consular visas is not expressly specified in the central official source. Insurance may be additionally required for certain long-term or special visa types.
- A Japan visa does not guarantee the right to enter the country. The border officer examines the valid passport, visa, purpose of travel, and planned duration of stay. If conditions are met, a landing permission indicating the status and duration of stay is affixed to the passport.
Transit Visa Requirements
- If the traveler can continue to the next flight at the same airport without leaving the international transit area, without passing through passport control or Japanese immigration inspection, a Japan transit visa or visa exemption is not required. If baggage collection, re-check-in, terminal or airport change, closure of the transit area due to an overnight stay, or passing through passport control is required, entry procedures into Japan are carried out.
- For transits involving entry into Japan, a visa exemption or a suitable visa obtained in advance is required depending on the traveler's situation. Transit visas are not issued on arrival in Japan.
- JAPAN eVISA cannot be used for transit purposes. A transit visa application must be made in paper form to the competent Japanese embassy, consulate-general, consular office, or locally authorized application center.
- A transit visa is issued for a short stopover in Japan while traveling to a third country. Permitted activities are limited to rest, sightseeing, and leisure activities. A transit visa should not be used for commercial activity, employment, or family and friend visits.
- The permitted stay under transit status must not exceed 15 days. The exact duration is indicated in the landing permission granted at the border.
- The applicant must submit a valid passport, a completely filled and signed visa application form, and a recent photograph. The photo area on the general paper visa form is 45 × 35 millimeters. Some missions require the photograph to have been taken within the last six months and apply specific background requirements.
- A complete transportation itinerary must be submitted. The document must show all flight or ship numbers, departure and arrival points, dates, times, and the travel segment after Japan. A paid ticket may not be mandatory; acceptance of a reservation or planned flight printout depends on the mission applied to.
- The right of entry to the country to be visited after Japan must be proven. A visa for the final country, residence permit, re-entry permit, or passport of that country may be submitted. If entry to the final destination is visa-free or with a visa on arrival, some missions may request an official government document showing this.
- If the transit in Japan will last longer than one night, a travel itinerary, accommodation information, and proof of sufficient financial means to cover expenses may be requested. How many months the bank statement should cover and the minimum account balance are not expressly specified in the central official source.
- If the application is made outside the country of nationality, a valid residence permit or proof of legal residence in the country of application may be requested.
- The exact number of blank pages in the passport is not expressly specified for all transit applications in the central official source. Some diplomatic missions require two blank visa pages.
- Whether the transit visa is single or double entry is determined according to the travel itinerary. A double-entry transit visa may be issued in cases where Japan is transited twice on the outward and return journeys.
- A common validity period for transit visas applicable in all countries is not expressly specified in the central official source. In current diplomatic mission practice, a single-entry transit visa may be published as valid for three months and a double-entry transit visa for four months. The exact validity is shown on the visa sticker.
- As of July 1, 2026, a separate and discounted "transit visa fee" category has been abolished. Current single or double entry visa rates apply to transit applications. The exact amount varies by nationality, reciprocity arrangement, and the mission applied to.
- The payment method varies according to the mission applied to. A single payment method for transit applications is not expressly specified in the central official source.
- For complete transit applications with no issues, the general visa processing time is five business days from the day following the date of submission. The local mission may publish a longer period, and files requiring additional review may take longer than one month.
- A common travel health insurance requirement or minimum insurance coverage applicable to all applicants for a transit visa is not expressly specified in the central official source.
- The mission examining the application may request additional documents, explanations, or an interview. Even if a transit visa has been issued, the border officer examines the passport, visa, onward travel arrangement, purpose of travel, and duration of stay, and makes the final decision on entry.
