The World's Most Restrictive Countries for Visitors 2026

How Do We Rank It?

The Most Restrictive Countries Ranking measures how many foreign passport holders are required to obtain a visa before travelling to a country. Countries that require advance visas from more passport holders rank higher. The global passport ranking is calculated separately using the model explained below.Global Ranking Methodology: passportreports.com ranks passports by their Mobility Score. The Mobility Score represents the total number of countries that can be entered visa-free, with a visa on arrival, or with an electronic travel authorization. If Mobility Scores are equal, the number of countries accessible without a visa is considered first. If that number is also equal, the number of countries accessible with an electronic travel authorization is considered. If the tie remains, the number of countries accessible with a visa on arrival is considered. If all values are equal, the countries share the same rank. Review the algorithm used in our methodology.

About Restrictive Countries

Some nations impose stricter entry requirements on foreign travelers than others, creating a spectrum of accessibility for global visitors. These destination countries typically demand that most passport holders obtain a visa before arrival, often involving more rigorous documentation and processing times. The level of restrictiveness can reflect a nation's security priorities, diplomatic relations, or immigration policies. Understanding these variations helps travelers plan their journeys more effectively.

Countries with high restrictiveness often require advance visa approval, sometimes with lengthy application procedures and multiple supporting documents. Common prerequisites include proof of sufficient funds, confirmed accommodation, and onward travel arrangements. Some destinations also mandate in-person interviews at consulates or biometric data collection as part of the visa process. These measures aim to control the flow of visitors while maintaining national security standards.

Compare destination countries by how many foreign passports normally require a visa before travel. The restrictive score uses visa-required cases; ties are ranked by fewer visa-free entries, then fewer eTA entries, and countries with the same visa-required, visa-free and eTA counts share one rank.
