Visa-Free Entry Requirements
- A passenger benefiting from visa exemption must carry a valid passport or travel document of the type specified in the agreement or official regulation on which the exemption is based. The permitted duration of stay and number of entries may vary according to the applied exemption arrangement.
- Children under 15 years of age whose identity is recorded in the passport of the parent, ascendant or legal guardian with whom they are traveling may be exempted from separate passport and visa requirements if the relevant conditions are met.
- Crew members serving on air or sea vessels must carry a valid crew license or crew certificate if they are only transiting or making a short stopover in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
- The international vaccination card may be checked upon entry by air into the country. An international certificate showing yellow fever vaccination is required.
E-Visa Application Requirements
- The electronic application is made by creating a user account on the official e-visa portal of the General Directorate for Migration. During account creation, first name, surname, e-mail address, nationality and telephone number are requested. The applicant must provide complete personal, passport, travel purpose and local responsible person information requested in the online form.
- The electronic system provides electronic pre-authorization for an airport or border visa to be stamped in the passport upon arrival in the country, rather than a classic electronic entry visa. The application can be made for business, visit, family visit or tourism purposes. Additional documents may be requested depending on the category selected in the application.
- For electronic pre-authorization, an application or request letter addressed to the General Directorate for Migration, a photocopy of the applicant's passport and an identity document of the responsible or inviting person in the Democratic Republic of the Congo must be submitted. If the responsible person is a foreigner, a passport photocopy is requested. Additional documents showing the local responsible person's legal status in the country may be requested depending on the nature of the application.
- A complete document upload list applicable to all applicants has not been published in the public section of the e-visa portal. The definitive document list must be applied according to the application steps displayed after selecting the visa type and travel purpose in the user account.
- The total electronic application fee is 300 USD. Of this amount, 50 USD is an administrative fee and 250 USD is the electronic authorization fee. Online payment support with Visa and Mastercard is indicated on the portal. Limitations on the refund of the paid administrative fee are subject to the application conditions.
- The official processing time of the application is stated as 72 hours from receipt of the complete application. The competent authority may request additional documents or explanations for security, immigration or document review purposes.
- The electronic authorization must be used within three months from the date of issuance. The authorization entitles the holder to obtain a single-entry, seven-day airport or border visa. The seven-day period may be subject to extension or status adjustment procedures with the General Directorate for Migration within the country.
- The approval document is sent to the applicant's e-mail address in PDF format and can be downloaded from the portal. The traveler must keep the document accessible during travel.
Visa on Arrival Requirements
- Visa on arrival is not a general system that any traveler can directly request at the border without prior authorization. An airport or port visa is issued at the point of entry to travelers who have a pre-issued flying visa authorization, electronic pre-authorization or explicit authorization from the Director General of Migration.
- The traveler must present their valid passport, electronic or written pre-authorization document and supporting documents used during the application to the entry officer.
- For an airport or border visa, 90 USD is paid at the point of entry.
- The visa is single-entry and grants a seven-day stay from the date of issuance. A traveler wishing to stay longer than seven days must apply to the central or provincial unit of the General Directorate for Migration before the expiry of the period to regularize their immigration status.
- It is stated that the airport or border visa issued through electronic pre-authorization can be used at the country's entry points. However, if a specific airport, port or border gate is written in the approval document, the traveler must only use the stated entry point.
- The international vaccination card must be kept ready during entry. A yellow fever vaccination certificate may be requested.
Consular Visa Application Requirements
- The application must be made to the embassy or consulate of the Democratic Republic of the Congo responsible for the place where the applicant legally resides. The central directive of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stipulates that the applicant must apply in person to the competent diplomatic mission and verbally explain the purpose of travel.
- The centrally confirmed basic conditions are: a valid passport, sufficient means of subsistence to cover the travel period, and an invitation or sponsorship provided by a natural or legal person legally established in the country. A travel visa does not grant the right to paid employment.
- The application form must be completed in full, dated and signed. At missions that accept online applications, printing the form and payment receipt may be required. Some missions require the submission of the form in two copies.
- The minimum passport validity period varies according to the mission applied to. Periods ranging from six months to one year have been published on official mission pages.
- A photocopy of the pages containing the identity information of the passport is requested. Some missions require a copy of the first two pages of the passport. A national identity card, residence permit, residency document or document showing legal stay in the country of application may be requested depending on the jurisdiction of the mission.
- The number of photographs may vary by mission. Current official mission checklists mostly request two identical and recent passport-type photographs. Some missions require the photograph to be front-facing, bareheaded and with a neutral background.
- An invitation letter or document of assumption of expenses is requested depending on the purpose of the application. The invitation may need to be certified by a notary and the Chancellery unit of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The invitation letter must include the name, surname, position, telephone number and address of the inviting person. For invitations made by a natural person, copies of the inviter's identity and position card may be requested. An official sponsorship document issued by the General Directorate for Migration may be accepted in lieu of an invitation.
- Employees may be asked for a service or employment certificate or an order of assignment; self-employed persons, unemployed persons or other applicants may be asked for documents showing their financial resources. In cases where there is no sponsor, proof of sufficient financial means throughout the travel period is required.
- Researchers and those traveling for academic and scientific purposes may be asked for a letter from their institution. Press and media personnel may be asked for accreditation from the competent ministry and a list of equipment to be carried.
- Minor applicants may be asked for a birth certificate, school document, parent identification and parental consent letter. If the child is traveling with only one parent, the consent letter signed by the other parent or the authorized parent may need to be certified by the local authority.
- The international vaccination card may not be added to the visa file at every mission; however, it must be kept ready for entry by air into the country. A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required.
- The consular processing time varies according to the mission and whether the applicant has traveled to the country before. Some missions have published a processing time of at least seven days, and for first-time travelers, a review period of at least two weeks.
- A consular visa may be issued for single, double or multiple entries. The validity of travel visas may be up to a maximum of six months. For longer-term stays or for employment purposes, an application for residence or work status must be made to the General Directorate for Migration within the country.
- Visa fees, payment methods and expedited processing fees vary according to the embassy or consulate applied to. Paid fees may not be refunded in case of rejection, cancellation or abandonment of travel.
- All visa requests are subject to evaluation by the competent visa commission or immigration authority. Incomplete or incorrectly completed files may not be accepted. The competent authority may request additional documents, personal application, verbal explanation or interview.
Transit Visa Requirements
- Passengers transiting by air or sea and not leaving the international transit area of the airport or port during transfer may be exempted from a transit visa. The passenger must only wait for the first suitable connection and must not make an official entry into the country.
- If it is necessary to leave the transit area, move to a different border gate, collect and re-check baggage, or pass through immigration control, a transit visa or another entry visa may be required.
- For a transit visa application, a valid passport, completed and signed visa form, photograph, transit route, planned entry and exit dates and a visa or travel document showing the right to enter the final destination country may be required. If applying outside the country of legal residence, a photocopy of the residence permit may be requested.
- Applicants without a sponsor must prove that they have sufficient financial means to cover their expenses during the transit period.
- Some official consular forms require a validity of more than six months and one photograph; however, the exact requirement is determined according to the current checklist of the mission applied to.
- Old official mission fee schedules should not be used as current fees.
