Visa-Free Entry Requirements
- The traveler must enter Bolivia through an authorized immigration control point. They must carry a passport that verifies their identity and is valid for at least six months on the date of entry. Another valid travel document may be accepted in cases expressly permitted by applicable international agreements.
- The traveler must not be subject to an explicit entry ban and must provide the travel, identity, accommodation, and contact information requested by the immigration authority. Visa exemption does not automatically guarantee admission to the country. The authenticity of submitted documents and the accuracy of provided information may be examined at entry control.
- The immigration authority may request the travel itinerary, a letter of invitation issued by a person with legal residence in Bolivia or an accommodation reservation, and documents demonstrating financial solvency. The financial solvency document may be requested to be submitted in the form of a bank statement, an available payment instrument, or another financial document.
- Upon completion of the entry process, an entry stamp is affixed to the passport. The traveler must be able to present the entry stamp proving their legal stay when leaving the country. In case of passport loss, the Bolivian Immigration Authority must be applied to for affixing a new entry stamp on the emergency passport or consular travel document.
- Tourist or visitor status does not permit activities that are paid, income-generating, or of an employment nature. For employment, education, family reunification, medical treatment, or any other long-term purpose, the relevant immigration status must be obtained separately.
- The maximum permitted visa-free stay varies depending on the agreement or visa exemption regulation applicable to the traveler.
Consular Visa Application Requirements
- The applicant must create an account in the official visa application system and complete the sworn visa application form with accurate and complete information. How the application form is to be signed and whether it is to be submitted only electronically or in print may vary depending on the embassy or consulate applied to.
- The online system is used for preparing the application form and initiating the visa process. The system is not an independent electronic travel authorization or a directly downloadable e-visa application. The visa is issued by the competent Bolivian embassy or consulate.
- The applicant must submit a passport valid for at least six months.
- A current photograph must be included in the general visa file. In the descriptions for tourism, specific purpose, student, and multiple-entry visas, the photo size is stated as 4 × 4 centimeters and the background color as red.
- If a high-risk area endemic for yellow fever is to be visited, a yellow fever vaccination certificate must be submitted. Another health certificate may also be requested depending on the nature of the travel.
- A document proving payment of the visa processing fee must be submitted. Visas issued under inter-state agreements or special arrangements may be exempt from the fee. The applicable fee may vary depending on nationality, the principle of reciprocity, visa type, and the foreign mission applied to.
- For a tourism or visitor visa application, a travel itinerary or return ticket must be submitted. Additionally, a letter of invitation from a person with legal residence in Bolivia who has been registered and authorized by the Immigration Authority, or an accommodation reservation, is required.
- For a tourism or visitor application, financial solvency may be evidenced by a bank statement and/or credit card. The central visa document also states that financial solvency may be demonstrated through a sworn declaration together with supporting documents.
- In applications subject to the prior approval of the Immigration Authority, the Immigration Authority decision authorizing entry into Bolivia must be attached to the file. This prior approval requirement varies depending on the applicant's nationality and the visa regulation applicable to them.
- For a specific purpose visa for employment, temporary work, volunteering, work under an academic exchange, religious activity, medical treatment, or family purposes, a document proving the activity to be carried out in Bolivia must be submitted. Where applicable, a letter of invitation from the inviting institution or company and supporting organizational documents are required.
- Applicants over 16 years of age applying for a specific purpose visa are required to obtain a valid police record, criminal record, or penal record certificate from their country of nationality or country of residence. Financial solvency is evidenced by a bank statement or credit card; for religious activity and family purpose applications, this financial document exemption may apply.
- For a student visa, one of the following must be submitted: a diploma, graduation certificate, student transcript, or similar educational documents proving the last completed education level. The educational document must be previously legalized by the competent Bolivian consular authority.
- The student visa file requires the original or legalized copy of the acceptance letter issued by the accepting educational institution. If based on a specific student exchange agreement, a legalized copy of the inter-institutional agreement must be submitted. A valid judicial or police record from the country of nationality or last country of residence is also requested; applicants under 16 years of age are exempt from this document.
- The student visa is valid for a maximum of 60 days. This visa enables the applicant to apply for a one-year temporary student residence with the Bolivian Immigration Authority. The temporary student residence may be renewed according to the relevant immigration rules until the education is completed.
- For a multiple-entry visa issued for investment or commercial activity, the incorporation documents of the company the applicant represents in the country of nationality or residence must be submitted in legalized form. If the company is established in Bolivia, a legalized photocopy or original electronic certificate of the tax identification number is required. A valid police record, criminal record, judicial record, or INTERPOL record must also be submitted.
- The multiple-entry visa is valid for one year and allows multiple entries and exits during this period. Each continuous stay in Bolivia must not exceed 90 days.
- For a humanitarian visa application, documents proving the need for humanitarian protection must be submitted. This visa may be issued in documented situations such as a need for international protection, victimization of human trafficking or migrant smuggling, or accompaniment of a person receiving medical treatment, and permits a stay of up to 30 days.
- In special procedures concerning victims of human trafficking or exploitation, a national identity document or another document proving identity may be accepted in place of a passport. Victimization may be demonstrated through a photograph, official record, news, report, or other supporting document.
- In a special application made for the purpose of accompanying a person receiving medical treatment, a medical report confirming that accompaniment is necessary must be submitted.
- For a courtesy visa, the invitation must be issued by a public institution in Bolivia and communicated through the Bolivian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
- Whether legal residence proof will be requested from persons who are not nationals of the country of application may vary depending on the foreign mission.
- The age-based exception clearly confirmed in the central source is that judicial or police records are not requested from applicants under 16 years of age for certain visa types.
- Legalization is mandatory only for education, company incorporation, and tax documents explicitly stated in the relevant visa type. There is no universal rule requiring all documents to be translated, notarized, apostilled, or legalized at a consulate. Different procedures may apply depending on the country of issuance, the type of document, and the mission applied to.
- The applicant should follow the current personalized checklist prepared according to their nationality, country of residence, purpose of travel, and the mission applied to.
Transit Visa Requirements
- For a transit visa, a sworn visa application form must be completed and a passport valid for at least six months must be submitted. An airplane, bus, or other transport ticket proving that the traveler's final destination is a third country must be attached to the file.
- Within the scope of general visa conditions, a current photograph, where applicable a yellow fever vaccination certificate or another health document, and a document proving payment of the processing fee may be requested.
- A transit visa is valid for a maximum of 15 days. Captains of ships or aircraft, pilots, and crew members may be considered as transit passengers.
- These conditions must be verified separately according to the traveler's nationality, route, transfer time, and whether they will exit the airport.
- Regarding the fee for a transit visa, the tariffs published by official foreign missions are not consistent with each other.
