Visa-Free Entry Requirements

  • The right to visa-free entry is limited to the passport type, travel purpose, maximum duration of stay and entry-exit control points specified in the relevant visa exemption regulation. In some of the tourist exemptions, it is necessary to use an ordinary passport and to travel through the permitted international control points. Passengers wishing to exceed the exemption period must apply for an appropriate visa.
  • The applicable exemption period and the border gates that may be used vary according to the passport and the agreement applied. There is no general permission that the exemption may be used for employment, paid activity or other purposes outside the scope of the exemption.
  • The minimum passport validity, required number of blank pages, return ticket, accommodation document, financial sufficiency, travel health insurance or minimum insurance coverage for visa-free passengers are not definitively specified in the central official source.

E-Visa Application Requirements

  • Myanmar's official electronic system accepts tourist and business e-visa applications. The applicant must first create an online account, verify their e-mail address, fill in the required fields, upload documents, check the information and pay the fee online. Required fields are marked on the form and the applicant confirms that they have read the terms and the relevant visa notification.
  • Application may only be made with a passport. Travel documents issued in lieu of a passport are not accepted for an e-visa, and an electronic approval obtained with such a document does not entitle the holder to enter the country. The passport must be valid for at least six months. The number of blank pages in the passport is not definitively specified in the central official source.
  • The first and last names must be written exactly as they appear in the machine-readable zone of the passport's biographical information page. A scan of the passport's biographical information page must be uploaded.
  • One color photograph taken within the last three months must be uploaded. The photo size is 4.6 × 3.8 centimeters. Accepted file formats for the uploaded photo and documents are JPG or PDF, and the maximum file size is 2 MB. The face must be fully positioned within the frame. The background color is not definitively specified in the central e-visa notification.
  • For a tourist e-visa application, proof of a return ticket from Myanmar must be attached. If entering via the Kawthaung land border gate, a travel itinerary must be submitted. A hotel reservation or a document showing accommodation on a boat must be uploaded. Tourists must stay in state-registered hotels, motels, inns, guesthouses, resort complexes or permitted boats.
  • For a business e-visa application, the applicant must be invited by a company registered in Myanmar or a registered chamber of commerce organization. Invitation letters from non-governmental organizations and international non-governmental organizations are not accepted for this application. The invitation letter, a business e-visa request letter, the registration certificate of the inviting company, a company summary issued by the Directorate of Investment and Company Administration within the last month, and a document showing the inviting company's valid annual return must be submitted.
  • Information of children under seven years old who are registered in the same passport may be added to the parent's application. For children with separate passports, a separate e-visa application must be made.
  • The application fee is paid by credit card. The application guide shows payment options with Visa and MasterCard. The paid transaction fee is non-refundable. The tourist e-visa fee is 50 US dollars, and the permitted duration of stay is 28 days. The business e-visa fee is 70 US dollars, and the permitted duration of stay is 70 days.
  • The processing time for normal tourist and business e-visa applications is at least three business days, excluding Myanmar weekends and official holidays. This time is not a guarantee of a result.
  • The electronic approval letter is valid for 90 days from the date of issue. Entry cannot be made with an approval that has not been used within this period. The e-visa is single-entry; a new visa must be obtained for re-entry. The duration of stay for a business e-visa may be extended within the scope of the regulations in force with a recommendation letter from the relevant ministry.
  • The approval letter must be downloaded from the e-mail account or from the application panel. A printout of the document must be made and presented together with the passport to the Myanmar immigration officer.
  • The e-visa may be used at Yangon International Airport, Mandalay International Airport, Nay Pyi Taw International Airport and Kawthaung International Land Border Control Point. As the permitted control points may change according to operational conditions, the current official list should be checked before travel.
  • A central requirement applicable to all applicants regarding bank account statement, minimum bank balance, employment or salary certificate, travel health insurance, minimum insurance coverage, fingerprint, interview, document translation, notarization, apostille and vaccination certificate is not definitively specified.

Visa on Arrival Requirements

  • Visa on arrival application may only be made at the immigration divisions of Yangon, Mandalay or Nay Pyi Taw international airports for eligible passport holders and permitted travel purposes. The application form must be obtained from the airline operating the flight to Myanmar or from the official immigration channel.
  • The passport must be valid for at least six months from the date of entry into Myanmar. Two color photographs measuring 4 × 6 centimeters, taken within the last six months, must be submitted. The required number of blank passport pages is not definitively specified in the central official source.
  • For the initial business visit, an invitation letter from the sponsoring company must be submitted. If the applicant will work in Myanmar, copies of the company registration, business license or permission to do business issued by the relevant ministry must be attached to the application. The name and location of the business or factory, the identity of the sponsor and the applicant's position must be fully reported.
  • Persons attending a meeting, workshop, seminar, event or official ceremony must submit an invitation letter issued by the relevant ministry. For a transit visa application, an airplane ticket showing onward travel to the next country must be presented.
  • No paid or unpaid employment may be undertaken other than the occupation or activity stated on the application form. Requests for extension of a business visa must be made with a recommendation letter from the relevant ministry and in accordance with the procedures in force.
  • The passenger's full address of stay must be reported. Accommodation must be at a state-licensed hotel, motel, guesthouse, a legally operating factory or workplace, or a permitted private residence. The passenger is obliged to report their accommodation address to the Immigration and National Registration Department of the district where they are staying.
  • Visas are issued free of charge for children under seven years old who are registered in the parent's passport. If the child has a separate passport, a document proving the parent-child relationship must be submitted.
  • Travel to closed or restricted areas without permission is not allowed. In case of refusal of entry, the passenger's return to the country of origin is arranged by the airline used. The applicant must comply with the decision of the Visa on Arrival Inspection and Issuance Team.
  • The business visa on arrival is 50 US dollars and grants a 70-day stay. The workshop, seminar, meeting or research visa is 40 US dollars and grants a 28-day stay. The crew visa is 40 US dollars and grants a 28-day stay. The tourist visa on arrival is 50 US dollars and grants a 30-day stay. The transit visa on arrival is 20 US dollars and grants a 24-hour stay.
  • The accepted payment method for the visa on arrival fee, official processing time, bank statement, minimum financial amount, health insurance, biometric data and interview requirements are not definitively specified in the central official source.

Consular Visa Application Requirements

  • Application must be made according to the form and document checklist of the Myanmar embassy or consulate serving the applicant's place of residence. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Myanmar publishes tourist, business, social, religious, official, employment, education, journalist, crew, workshop-seminar-meeting-research and other visa types, but does not provide a single central document list applicable to all missions.
  • The requested number of forms, photo specifications, blank passport pages, postal or in-person application procedure, payment method and processing time may vary according to the mission. The current checklist of the mission where the application will be made should be taken as basis.
  • The official Myanmar Embassy in Washington's tourist visa checklist requests one completed application form, two photographs, one employment history form and the original passport or travel document. The passport must be valid for at least six months and have pages available for visa stamping. Applicants not holding a US passport must submit a copy of a Green Card or a document showing their legal status in the USA.
  • For a tourist application, one of the following must be submitted: an airplane ticket or travel itinerary, a confirmation letter from the package tour organizer, or a hotel reservation. For postal applications, a pre-paid, traceable return envelope addressed to the applicant is required.
  • At the Washington mission, two color photographs taken within the last six months are required for a tourist visa. The photograph must have a white background, be front-facing and full-face, and be prepared in the size of 35 × 45 millimeters or 2 × 2 inches. Digital prints with visible pixels or dot patterns and photocopied photographs are not accepted.
  • At the Washington mission, the single-entry tourist visa fee is 40 US dollars. Payment is made only by bank check or money order issued in the name of the Myanmar Embassy; credit card, personal check and cash are not accepted. The stated minimum processing time for complete applications is three business days. The permitted duration of stay is 28 days and cannot be extended.
  • For a business visa application, the following may be requested: completed application form, two photographs, employment history form, original passport valid for at least six months, proof of legal residence in the country of application, a business letter from the applicant's employing company, an invitation letter from the company in Myanmar, and the valid registration certificate of the inviting company. Company letters must be on letterhead.
  • At the Washington mission, the single-entry business visa fee is 50 US dollars. A three-month multiple-entry visa is 200 US dollars, a six-month multiple-entry visa is 400 US dollars, and a one-year multiple-entry visa is 600 US dollars. The issuance of a multiple-entry visa is at the discretion of the mission, and first-time business travelers are not considered eligible for a multiple-entry visa. The single-entry business visa must be used within three months from the date of issue and provides a 70-day stay. The duration of stay may be extended according to the relevant rules.
  • For other consular visa types, an invitation letter, a letter from the employing or educational institution, a religious institution recommendation, approval from the relevant ministry, a sponsor document or a professional duty letter may be requested. The exact documents are determined according to the selected visa type and the mission where the application is made.
  • A central rule applicable to all missions regarding the validity period of a bank account statement, minimum financial amount, general health insurance coverage, biometric data, interview, document translation, notarization, legalization and apostille is not definitively specified.

Transit Visa Requirements

  • A transit visa may be obtained in advance from a consulate or on arrival at permitted airports for eligible passengers. A transit passenger must present an airplane ticket showing onward travel to the country after Myanmar. The maximum permitted duration of stay is 24 hours and cannot be extended. The transit visa fee is 20 US dollars.
  • For a transit visa on arrival, the passport must be valid for at least six months from the date of entry into the country, two color photographs measuring 4 × 6 centimeters taken within the last six months and the onward flight ticket must be submitted. The application is made at the immigration division of Yangon, Mandalay or Nay Pyi Taw international airports.
  • For a transit visa application through the official mission in Washington, one completed application form, two photographs, an employment history form, the original passport with validity of at least six months and available visa pages, an onward airplane ticket to the next country, and a traceable, pre-paid return envelope are requested. Applicants not holding a US passport must submit a document showing their legal status in the USA.
  • For the Washington mission, photographs must be taken within the last six months, in color, with a white background, front-facing full-face, and of size 35 × 45 millimeters or 2 × 2 inches. The transit visa fee is paid only by bank check or money order; credit card, personal check and cash are not accepted. The stated minimum processing time for complete consular applications is three business days.

Myanmar: Key Destinations

Myanmar's principal international gateway is Yangon, the country's largest city and former capital. The current capital, Naypyidaw, is a planned city located in central Myanmar. Mandalay, the last royal capital, serves as a major cultural and economic hub in the north.

The ancient city of Bagan features thousands of temples and pagodas, making it a top cultural destination. Inle Lake offers floating gardens and traditional stilt-house villages, while Ngapali Beach provides a serene coastline escape. Yangon's Shwedagon Pagoda is a significant religious landmark.

Travelers often begin in Yangon before heading north to Mandalay and Bagan. From Mandalay, one can journey to Inle Lake via road or domestic flight. Many itineraries combine cultural sites in central Myanmar with beach relaxation along the Bay of Bengal.
