How Do We Rank It?

The NATO Ranking compares only passports from countries included in NATO. The results are re-ranked from 1 within NATO.Global Ranking Methodology: passportreports.com ranks passports by their Mobility Score. The Mobility Score represents the total number of countries that can be entered visa-free, with a visa on arrival, or with an electronic travel authorization. If Mobility Scores are equal, the number of countries accessible without a visa is considered first. If that number is also equal, the number of countries accessible with an electronic travel authorization is considered. If the tie remains, the number of countries accessible with a visa on arrival is considered. If all values are equal, the countries share the same rank. Review the algorithm used in our methodology.

About NATO Countries

NATO is a transatlantic alliance created in 1949 to connect North American and European security cooperation. Its members are sovereign states that consult, decide and act together through shared political and military structures. The Alliance does not issue a common passport or create a single border area for travellers. This page uses NATO membership only as a comparison group for national passport mobility.

The Alliance works through collective defence, political consultation, deterrence, crisis management and cooperation with partners. Decisions are made by consensus, so every member has a voice in the political direction of the organisation. The members share a security framework, but their passports still reflect separate national citizenship and entry agreements. For that reason, mobility scores can differ clearly among NATO countries.

The NATO ranking view compares only the passports included in this group, while the global view keeps the same passports inside the worldwide index. The figures come from the central Passport Reports system and include visa-free destinations, visa on arrival, eTA access and visa-required destinations. The same ranking order and tie-break logic used across the website remain unchanged. When central mobility records are updated, the figures on this page update automatically.
