Uganda: Visa and entry documents and requirements
Visa requirements may change. Always verify the latest information through official government sources.
Visa-Free Entry Requirements
- Passengers benefiting from visa-free entry must travel with a valid passport or an appropriate travel document.
- Passengers eligible for visa exemption may travel with a valid Conventional Travel Document issued by another country. The document must be valid and meet Uganda's other entry conditions.
- For eligible passengers under regional free movement regulations, a valid national identity card, e-passport, or laissez-passer may be accepted. Foreign residents benefiting from the regional InterState Pass scheme must present a valid passport and appropriate residence permit. This scheme is only valid for travel to Uganda from within the relevant region.
- Laissez-passer documents issued by international organizations recognized by Uganda may be used for official duties. Acceptance of the document depends on the purpose of travel, the issuing organization, and the official duty status.
- A valid yellow fever vaccination certificate must be presented upon entry into the country. Current official mission information indicates this certificate as a mandatory health document for entry into the country.
E-Visa Application Requirements
- Passengers subject to a Uganda visa must submit their applications through the official Uganda Electronic Visa and Permit System. Paper applications are not processed under the general system. As new visa applications cannot be made at the border, visa approval must be obtained before travel.
- The applicant must start a new application in the system, accept the terms of responsibility and use, select the visa type, category and subcategory, complete the personal and travel information in the electronic form, and upload the documents pertaining to the selected category. The system generates a reference number for the application.
- For categories requiring an application fee, payment can be made online by Visa or MasterCard. Fees are non-refundable and a bank processing fee may apply. Diplomatic and official visa applications are processed without a fee.
- Documents must be in English. Documents not in English must be presented in English.
- The usual processing time for visa applications is two to three business days. Applications requiring additional documents or security verification may take longer. It is recommended to submit the application at least five business days before the planned travel.
- If the application is approved, the travel authorization or visa approval letter is sent to the applicant by email. The applicant must download and print this document and carry it during travel.
- At the border, passport, printed approval letter, originals or copies of uploaded documents, and payment receipts may be requested. Border authorities may collect biometric data and conduct secondary inspection if necessary. Electronic approval does not constitute a guarantee of entry; the final decision on admission rests with the border authority.
- Each passenger, including children and dependents, must submit a separate application in their own name. The application system or reviewing authority may request additional documents depending on the applicant's age and situation.
Single-Entry Ordinary Visa
- A scanned copy of the passport's biographical information page must be submitted and the passport must be valid for at least six months. A recent passport-sized photograph must be uploaded. General official information requires the photograph to have a white background.
- For tourist travel, a tour plan, travel itinerary or transport reservation and hotel reservation must be submitted. If accommodation is outside a hotel, the accommodation address must be provided.
- For travel for business meetings or conferences, an invitation letter indicating the full address in Uganda and the purpose of the business trip must be submitted. If the inviting party is a natural person, a document showing the immigration or residence status of this person in Uganda is required. The photograph must have been taken within the last six months.
- For applications made for educational purposes, an invitation letter from the educational institution, an admission document, a recent photograph, and a document showing the status of the host or responsible party in Uganda must be submitted. For long-term formal education, a student permit may also be required.
- For family visit applications, an invitation letter, the immigration status of the inviting person in Uganda, a recent photograph, and proof of accommodation must be submitted. If another accommodation is used, the full address must be provided.
- Medical travel is among the purposes for which a single-entry ordinary visa can be used. Additional documents may be requested during review.
- The single-entry visa fee is 50 USD. The visa is single-entry and may be issued for a stay of up to three months. The visa approval authorization is valid for 90 days from the date of approval; if not used within this period, it becomes invalid and a new application must be made.
- The initial stay period granted upon entry may be extended by a total of 60 days in two stages if deemed appropriate. The extension application can be made online or at authorized immigration offices.
Multiple-Entry Visa
- The passport's biographical information page must be submitted and the passport must be valid for at least six months. A recent passport-sized photograph, a valid criminal record or police certificate obtained from the person's own country or through Interpol, a yellow fever vaccination certificate, and a petition explaining the reasons for needing a multiple-entry visa must be submitted.
- A letter of recommendation from reference persons in Uganda is required. Since the number of reference persons is written inconsistently on the central service page, the exact number should be confirmed with the immigration authority before application.
- The multiple-entry visa is issued to frequent travelers and does not confer the right to work. The current categorical page indicates a fee of 100 USD for a 6 or 12-month visa, and 200 USD for a 24-month visa. The fee is non-refundable and a bank processing charge may apply.
East Africa Tourist Visa
- A copy of the passport's biographical information page must be submitted and the passport must be valid for at least six months. A recent passport-sized photograph, a valid yellow fever vaccination certificate, a return ticket, and a travel itinerary must be uploaded.
- This visa may only be used for tourism purposes and does not confer the right to work. The visa is valid for 90 days, is multiple-entry, and its validity period cannot be extended. If the application was made through Uganda, the first entry into the region must be via Uganda.
- The visa fee is 100 USD. The fee is non-refundable and a bank processing charge may apply.
Diplomatic and Official Visa
- This category is used for official duty travel by holders of diplomatic, official or service passports. A copy of the passport's cover page and biographical information page must be submitted, and the passport must be valid for at least six months.
- A recent passport-sized photograph, a yellow fever vaccination certificate, and a note verbale or equivalent official letter supporting the purpose of the official visit must be submitted. The note verbale must clearly state the traveler's identity, the purpose of the mission, the host institution, and the intended duration of stay.
- The application is made through the electronic system. Depending on the diplomatic mission applied to and the mission status, additional submission of supporting documents to the mission may be requested. No fee is charged for this visa.
Matters Not Universally Specified in Central Sources
- Additional documents, biometric processing, or verification may be requested depending on the characteristics of the application.
Transit Visa Requirements
- A transit visa must be obtained online for passengers continuing to a third country via Uganda. A copy of the passport's biographical information page must be submitted and the passport must be valid for at least six months.
- A recent passport-sized photograph, a yellow fever vaccination certificate, a letter explaining the reason for transit through Uganda and the destination country, and a document proving entry permission to the country of destination must be submitted. This proof may be a valid visa, residence permit, or other entry authorization depending on the travel situation.
- Documents must be presented in English. The reviewing authority may request additional documents during the application.
- The transit visa fee is 50 USD. The fee is non-refundable and a bank processing charge may apply. Payment must be made through the official electronic system.
- The transit visa is valid for a maximum of seven days and cannot be extended. The approved travel authorization must be printed and presented at the border together with the passport, uploaded documents, and payment receipt. If deemed necessary, biometric registration and additional border inspection may be conducted.
