Visa-Free Entry Requirements
- The passenger must carry a valid and recognized passport or travel document authorized to cross the external borders of Hungary and the Schengen Area. The document must be valid for at least three months after the planned date of departure from the Schengen Area and must have been issued within the last ten years. A biometric passport requirement may apply for certain types of passports; this requirement varies by passport type and the passenger's status. A driver's license is not accepted as a travel document.
- Short-term visa-free stay is generally up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Previous short stays in the Schengen Area are included in this calculation. Visa exemption does not grant an automatic right of entry; the entry conditions must be met at the border.
- The border officer may request evidence of the purpose and conditions of the travel. Hotel reservation, invitation letter, conference or event invitation, travel itinerary, and documents showing return or onward travel must be in the passenger's possession. The documents requested may vary depending on the purpose of travel and personal circumstances.
- The passenger must have sufficient financial means to cover the stay and the costs of return or onward travel. Financial sufficiency may be evidenced by cash, bank or credit card, traveler's cheques, or an invitation letter indicating that expenses will be covered by the inviting party.
- No general vaccination certificate or health certificate requirement has been published either. Special border measures based on public health grounds may additionally apply.
- Passengers entering for a short stay through Hungary's Schengen external borders and falling within the system's scope are recorded under the Entry/Exit System. Travel document information, entry and exit dates, facial image, and fingerprints may be processed electronically. The system has been fully operational at all Schengen external border crossings since 10 April 2026, and electronic registration has replaced the passport stamp for passengers within its scope.
- A minor passenger must carry a valid travel document. If the child is traveling alone, with only one parent, or with a person other than the legal representative, a parental or legal representative consent may be required. The format, translation, notarization, and required birth or custody documents to be carried vary depending on the travel conditions.
Visa on Arrival Requirements
- In Hungary, there is no general visa-on-arrival system that passengers can ordinarily use without prior application. A visa may only be issued at the Schengen external border under exceptional circumstances. The applicant must prove unforeseeable and compelling reasons that prevented prior visa application. The purpose of travel and entry conditions must be explained; there must be no doubt that the applicant will return to their home country safely or transit to another country where they will be admitted.
- The applicant must possess a valid and recognized travel document, prove the purpose of stay, have sufficient financial means, and not be subject to an entry ban or an obstacle regarding public order, internal security, or public health. The competent border authority may request supporting documents proving the unforeseeable and compelling reason.
- The visa issued at the external border may permit a stay of up to 15 days, depending on the purpose and conditions of travel. If issued for transit purposes, the permitted duration is limited to the time necessary to complete the transit journey. The visa may be valid for the entire Schengen Area or, in exceptional cases, may be issued as a limited territorial visa valid only for Hungary.
- Valid travel health insurance may be required under normal conditions. If insurance cannot be obtained at the border crossing or humanitarian reasons exist, the insurance requirement may be waived.
- Issuance of a visa at the border is exceptional and subject to the assessment of the competent authority. The fact that a prior visa application was possible but not made does not alone guarantee issuance of a visa at the border.
Consular Visa Application Requirements
- The short-term Schengen C visa may be issued for purposes such as tourism, family or friend visit, business, conference, education, scientific or professional activity, culture, sports, official visit, and medical treatment. The total permitted stay is up to 90 days in any 180-day period. The visa may be single-entry, double-entry, or multiple-entry. The validity period of the visa is determined by the assessment of the application and may not exceed five years; however, a long visa validity does not eliminate the 90/180-day limit per stay.
- The application must be made to the competent consulate of Hungary if Hungary is the sole or main destination of the travel. If an equal duration is spent in more than one Schengen country for the same purpose, the application is submitted to the representation of the country of first entry into the Schengen Area. The application is normally made to the competent representation in the country where the applicant legally resides. An application from a person legally present in another country may be accepted at the discretion of the consulate if a valid justification is accepted.
- The application must be made no earlier than six months and, as a rule, no later than 15 days before the planned travel. The standard processing time is 15 calendar days from the submission of an admissible application. The period may be extended up to 45 calendar days when detailed examination, additional documentation, or further verification is required.
- The official Schengen visa application form must be filled in legibly and completely, dated, and signed by the applicant. For minor applicants, the form must be signed by the parent or legal representative according to custody status. The representation applied to may request additional copies or electronic pre-registration.
- The applicant must submit a valid and recognized passport or travel document. The document must contain at least two blank pages, have been issued within the last ten years, and be valid for at least three months after the planned date of departure from the Schengen Area. If multiple trips are planned, the validity must continue for at least three months after the last planned departure date.
- Copies of the biographical information page of the passport and pages showing previous visas and entry-exit records may be requested by the competent consulate.
- One color, passport-type photograph taken within the last six months must be submitted. The photograph must comply with ICAO standards. The competent consulate or authorized application center may publish additional technical requirements.
- A person who is not a national of the country where the application is made must submit a valid residence permit or other legal residence document. National identity card, address document, or additional documents regarding legal status in the application country may be requested according to the local checklist of the competent representation.
- The applicant must submit travel health insurance valid in all Schengen countries and for the entire planned period of stay or transit. The insurance must have a minimum coverage of 30,000 euros; it must cover costs that may arise from repatriation for medical reasons, emergency medical assistance, emergency hospital treatment, and death.
- The purpose of travel and accommodation arrangements must be documented. For tourist travel, a prepaid hotel or other accommodation reservation or an organized tour document may be submitted. For educational, scientific, or professional activities, a letter from the host institution and proof of accommodation are required. Travel itinerary, transportation reservations, and return or onward travel tickets may be requested.
- For a family or friend visit, an invitation letter must be submitted. The invitation letter may be prepared in the form of a notarial deed and a copy of the inviting person's identity card or passport may be attached. For a family visit, the degree of family relationship, name, address, and telephone number of the invited family member, and the purpose of entry and stay must be explained. To prove the family tie, a birth certificate, marriage certificate, or another civil status document may be requested by the competent representation.
- For a business trip, an invitation letter from the business partner in Hungary, documents showing the existence of a commercial relationship or a letter from the relevant chamber of commerce, and proof of accommodation may be submitted. For a conference application, the organizer's invitation or confirmation of participation, a letter from the sending institution, and a document showing payment of the registration fee may be requested. For cultural and sporting activities, an invitation from the host organization, contract, accreditation, or participation document must be submitted.
- For an application for medical treatment, a letter from the accepting healthcare institution, a document showing that treatment costs can be covered, and proof of planned accommodation are required. If the cost of treatment is covered by a sponsor, the sponsor's financial documents may also be requested.
- The applicant must document sufficient financial means to cover travel and return costs. For this purpose, a current income or employment certificate from the employer, a bank statement for the last three months, a pension payment document, for entrepreneurs a company registration certificate and accountant's letter, or an invitation and sponsorship letter may be submitted.
- If a sponsor is used, the sponsor's identity, relationship with the applicant, contact information, the expenses to be covered, and financial capacity must be documented. The requested sponsor bank statements, income documents, copies of passport or residence permit vary according to the purpose of travel and the local checklist of the competent representation.
- Biometric data, including fingerprints and photograph, are taken during the application. Persons who have provided fingerprints for a Schengen visa application within the last 59 months may not have fingerprints taken again if the existing record can be used. The date of previous fingerprints must be indicated on the application form. Exceptions may apply for certain ages and physical impossibility. The consulate may call the applicant for an interview.
- For minor applicants, a declaration by the legal representative and documents showing how the journey will be financed must be submitted. For children traveling alone or with only one parent, a notarized consent from the other parent, birth certificate, or custody decision may be requested according to the local checklist of the competent representation.
- Translation may be required for documents not in English or in a language accepted by the competent representation. Whether the translation must be prepared by a sworn translator, notarization, apostille, or consular legalization is required varies by document type and the representation applied to.
- The standard Schengen A or C visa fee is 90 euros for adults and 45 euros for children over 6 and under 12 years old. Fee exemptions or different fees may apply for certain categories of applicants. The fee is paid when the application is submitted and is not refunded if the application is rejected. If the application is made through a service provider, an additional service fee may be charged.
- The document list is not definitive and limited. The consulate may request additional documents, current bank statement, explanation, translation, or an interview. The issuance of a visa does not grant an automatic right of entry into the country. The border officer may wish to see documents regarding the purpose of travel, accommodation, financial capacity, insurance, and return plan again.
Transit Visa Requirements
- The airport transit visa allows the passenger to make a flight connection in the international transit area of an airport in Hungary. This visa does not grant the right to leave the international transit area or enter Hungary. If during transit it is necessary to pass through passport control, collect baggage, change terminals or airports, or leave the transit area for an overnight stay, the airport transit visa may not be sufficient and a short-stay Schengen C visa may be required.
- The applicant must submit a legible, complete, and signed application form; a valid travel document; one color passport photograph taken within the last six months; biometric data; travel health insurance; and documents showing the purpose of the transit journey. The passport must contain at least two blank pages, have been issued within the last ten years, and remain valid for at least three months after the planned departure from the Schengen Area.
- Flight reservations, connecting flight ticket, and valid visa, residence permit, or other entry document showing admission to the final destination country must be submitted when required. The exact transit documents requested vary according to the travel route, airport, passport type, and the local checklist of the representation applied to.
- Travel health insurance must be valid for the entire transit period and in Schengen countries, provide a minimum coverage of 30,000 euros, and cover costs of emergency medical assistance, hospital treatment, medical repatriation, and costs in the event of death.
- The application must be made no earlier than six months and, as a rule, no later than 15 days in advance. The standard airport transit visa fee is 90 euros for adults and 45 euros for children over 6 and under 12 years old. Fee exemptions or different fees may apply according to personal circumstances.
- The airport transit visa may be issued for single, double, or multiple transits. The validity of a multiple airport transit visa may be up to six months. The territorial validity of the visa may be limited to the international airport transit areas of only specific Schengen countries.
