Visa-Free Entry Requirements
- Visa exemption is subject to the terms of the visa exemption agreement in force between Nauru and the relevant state. The traveler must hold a valid passport or travel document that falls within the scope of the exemption, not exceed the maximum permitted stay stipulated in the agreement, and meet the requirements regarding passport type, purpose of travel, or other eligibility conditions. The exemption period and accepted passport type vary according to the agreement; there is no single maximum permitted stay applicable to all exemption holders.
- An arrival card must be completed, a declaration of accuracy signed, and submitted to the immigration officer upon request. The card includes: first and last name, passport number and expiration date, nationality, occupation, flight or vessel information, country of embarkation, and address in Nauru. Temporary visitors also state their country of residence, intended duration of stay, and main purpose of travel. Certain serious criminal convictions, previous visa or entry refusals, visa cancellations, deportation, and removal orders must also be declared. The competent authority may request additional information.
- Immigration officers at the airport may temporarily take possession of the passport to complete processing. The passport may be returned the same day or the following morning.
- A machine-readable or biometric passport requirement is also not published as a common rule for all exemption holders.
- There is no common list of documents required of all visa-free travelers regarding round-trip ticket, accommodation reservation, proof of financial means, bank statement, and travel health insurance.
Visa on Arrival Requirements
- Application for a visitor visa on arrival is only possible for travelers specified in Nauru’s immigration legislation as eligible for this facility. Eligibility varies by nationality and applicable passport category. Ineligible travelers must complete their visa application before entering Nauru.
- The person applying on arrival must hold a valid passport. The passport must not be due to expire within three months from the date of application. The traveler must also have a valid ticket for travel to another country from Nauru and the documents required for entry into that country.
- Completion of the standard visitor visa form is not mandatory for this application route. However, the immigration officer may request reasonable additional information, documents, or a sworn declaration related to the application.
- An arrival card must be completed and signed. The traveler must provide identity and passport details, flight or vessel information, address in Nauru, purpose of travel, intended duration of stay, and relevant immigration or criminal history.
- The visitor visa granted on arrival may be for a maximum of three months and is valid for single entry only. The visa may be used for purposes such as holiday, visiting friends or relatives, meetings, conferences, seminars, workshops, cultural activities, or sports activities. Business, professional, or employment activities may not be conducted on a visitor visa. Religious activities other than normal personal worship are also outside the scope of the visitor visa.
- The right to apply on arrival is linked to legislative categories exempt from the visitor visa fee. Persons covered by this route are not charged the standard visitor visa fee.
Consular Visa Application Requirements
- Travelers who must obtain a visa in advance should use the official application form appropriate for their purpose of travel. The application may be submitted to the Nauru Immigration Office or to the competent Nauru diplomatic mission or consular authority in the applicant’s country of residence. The general visa page of Nauru also requests that requests for entry into the country be sent to the Nauru Immigration Office by email.
- The form must be completed in English, all questions answered truthfully and completely, required attachments submitted, and signed by the applicant. Provision of false or misleading information may result in refusal of the application or cancellation of a visa already issued. Relevant changes occurring during the application or visa validity period must be reported to the Immigration Office.
- The passport must be valid for at least three months from the date of application. Certified copies of the pages containing identity details of the passport or accepted travel document must be submitted. If the passport is replaced after the visa is issued, the Immigration Office must be informed. Where the visa is affixed to the passport, the passport must be kept valid for the duration of the visa.
- One recent passport photograph measuring 45 × 35 millimeters must be submitted, and the applicant’s name must be written on the back of the photograph.
- In addition to the purpose of travel and requested duration, the application form requires the following: full name, gender, date and place of birth, passport details, nationality, country of residence, marital status, current address, email address, telephone number, and address of stay in Nauru. Information must also be provided on previous visits to Nauru and visas, visa refusals, visa cancellations, the country from which the application is made, health status, possibility of infectious disease, ongoing criminal investigations, certain criminal convictions, and deportation history.
- The document checklist for a visitor visa includes: certified copies of identity pages of the passport or travel document, one photograph, a police certificate, and a medical fitness certificate. The applicant may mark a document that does not apply to them as 'not applicable' on the checklist.
- The police certificate must be obtained from the jurisdictions where the applicant has resided in the previous 12 months. The certificate is expected to cover the entire recorded criminal history in the relevant jurisdiction. If the applicant has resided in more than one place in the previous 12 months, certificates from more than one authority may be required.
- The medical fitness certificate must show that chest X-ray and blood tests have been performed and that no infectious disease or serious abnormality has been detected. There is no separately published general requirement for a vaccination certificate.
- Some applicants are required to provide a letter prepared by a sponsor who is a Nauruan citizen and resident of Nauru. The letter must state the sponsor’s name, region of residence, relationship to the applicant, and the sponsorship conditions undertaken, including accommodation. This requirement is not universal for all nationalities.
- The general visa page of Nauru requests, in addition to the completed form and a scan of the passport information page, a letter issued by the employer explaining the reason for travel. However, the detailed checklist for the visitor visa does not repeat this document for all applicants.
- Documents not in English must be submitted with a certified English translation together with a copy of the original document. Document copies must be certified as true copies by a competent oath authority or a person or institution considered equivalent in the country where the application is made. Original documents should only be sent if specifically requested.
- To obtain a visitor visa, a valid exit ticket to another country from Nauru and the documents required for entry into that country must be available. It is not stated that a hotel reservation, daily travel itinerary, or separate accommodation document is mandatory for all applicants.
- A visitor visa may be granted for a maximum of three months and for single entry. The application form offers options for up to one month, up to two months, or up to three months. The official fees are AUD 50, AUD 150, and AUD 250 respectively. Fee exemptions may apply based on nationality or passport category.
- Payment may be made in cash at the Nauru Revenue Office or, if applying from abroad, at the Nauru mission or consular authority. Electronic bank transfer is also accepted, and the payment receipt must be attached to the application. If proof of payment is not provided for non-exempt applications, the application will not be processed. Paid fees are non-refundable and non-transferable to another application.
- The visitor visa may be used for holiday, visiting friends or relatives, conferences, meetings, seminars, workshops, cultural activities, and sports activities. For purposes such as business, professional activity, media, research, education, employment, or religious duties, the relevant separate visa class and its application form must be used. The fees and additional documents for these visa classes vary according to the purpose of travel.
- A single-entry media business visa is required for media activities. The published fee for this visa is AUD 8,000 and is non-refundable even if the application is unsuccessful. The current fee for a general business visa for single entry up to three months is set at AUD 3,000, as amended on 30 April 2026.
- A child traveling with a parent or legal guardian and whose name appears on the parent’s or guardian’s passport may be included in the same visa.
- The competent immigration authority may request additional information or documents not included in the application form and may require the provided information to be confirmed by a sworn declaration.
- A common rule regarding carrying the electronic approval in printed or digital form has also not been published.
