Visa-Free Entry Requirements

  • Third-country travelers benefiting from the right to visa-free short-term entry must carry a valid passport or travel document recognized by Lithuania. Consular Visa Application Requirements — Short-Stay Schengen C Visa

  • Lithuania must be either the single destination of the travel or the main destination in terms of duration of stay or purpose of travel. If the main destination cannot be determined, the first entry into the Schengen Area must take place at an external border of Lithuania for the application to be made to Lithuania.
  • As a rule, the application must be submitted to the Lithuanian diplomatic mission, consulate, other Schengen authority representing Lithuania, or authorized external service provider responsible for the applicant's country of legal residence. A document showing that the applicant is legally present or resident in the country of application may be requested.   • The application form must be completed through MIGRIS. The applicant must select their nationality, create an account, complete the relevant Schengen visa form, print the form and sign it. A separate form must be prepared for each person registered on the same travel document. The form for a minor applicant must be signed by the person exercising parental authority or legal guardian.
  • The application may be submitted no earlier than six months before the planned start of travel. Seafarers on duty may apply no earlier than nine months before. As a rule, the application must be submitted no later than 15 calendar days before the start of travel. Later applications may be permitted in justified emergencies.
  • The passport or travel document must be valid for at least three months beyond the planned date of departure from the Schengen Area, must have been issued within the last ten years, and must contain at least two blank pages.   • If the applicant is not using their own financial means, an electronic undertaking may be submitted through MIGRIS by the inviting party or sponsor. The undertaking must show that accommodation, living expenses or return expenses will be covered by the sponsor. Additional documents regarding the sponsor's identity and financial capacity may be requested.
  • Financial means may be evidenced by personal bank account statements, pay slips, employment contract, leave letter, pension income, company accounts, tax documents, credit card statements, or sponsor undertaking.   • If a minor is traveling with only one parent or without parents, a notarized consent letter, copies of the parents' or guardians' identity documents, and documents indicating custody may be requested. National D Visa

  • All national D visa applications must be initiated through MIGRIS. Applicants located outside Lithuania submit their documents to the authorized center of the external service provider selected by the Migration Department. Diplomatic missions have not been examining national visa applications since 1 July 2023.
  • The country and center where the application may be made vary depending on the applicant's nationality, legal residence and legal basis of the national visa request. MIGRIS generates a personalized document list after the selected application reason and personal information are completed. Therefore, there is no single universal list of supporting documents applicable to all national visa applicants.
  • After the MIGRIS application is sent to the external service provider, an appointment must also be booked through MIGRIS. At the appointment, the applicant must present their passport, originals of the documents uploaded in the system, and other evidence requested based on the application reason.
  • A national visa is issued only for long-stay reasons specified in the legislation. Depending on the application reason, acceptance into an education or exchange program, research or teaching agreement, sports organization document, maritime documents, journalist accreditation, seasonal work permit, secondment document, company documents, volunteering document, or evidence of long-term medical treatment may be requested. For some long-term education and work purposes, an application for a temporary residence permit instead of a national visa is required.
  • The passport must have been issued within the last ten years, contain at least two blank visa pages, and be valid for at least three months after the expiry date of the requested visa. Transit Visa Requirements

  • Lithuania uses a Type A airport transit visa for passage through the international transit area of an airport and a Type C short-stay visa for transit through the territory of Schengen. A Type A visa only permits transit through the international transit areas of the airport and does not grant the right to enter the territory of Lithuania or another Schengen country.
  • The requirement for an airport transit visa varies depending on the traveler's nationality, the travel document used, and the valid visas or residence permits they hold. The personal situation must be checked through the official visa inquiry system.
  • A Type A transit visa application must be prepared, printed and signed through MIGRIS. The applicant must submit a valid travel document, biometric data, visa fee, and supporting documents requested by the application location. The passport must have been issued within the last ten years, be valid for at least three months after the planned departure from the Schengen Area, and contain at least two blank pages.
  • The applicant must submit a valid visa, residence permit or other entry authorization for the final destination country, and a flight reservation or tickets showing that they will continue to the final destination after the airport transit.
  • If a change of airport, collection of baggage, re-check-in, exiting the transit area, or use of a connecting flight within Schengen is required, a Type A airport transit visa may not be sufficient. In that case, a Type C short-stay visa may be necessary.
  • For a Type C transit visa, the transit route, a visa or residence permit showing admission to the next country, transport reservations, proof of accommodation if necessary, and sufficient financial means throughout the journey must be provided. The permitted stay cannot exceed 90 days in any 180-day period; however, the visa may be issued only for the proven transit route and dates.
  • An airport transit visa may be issued for single or multiple entries. A person requesting a multiple-entry transit visa must prove the need for repeated transit. The exact validity period is determined by the decision of the competent authority.
  • General Schengen visa application and fee rules apply to transit visa applications. The processing time is normally 15 calendar days and may be extended up to 45 calendar days in case of further examination.
  • Whether travel health insurance is mandatory for all applicants for a Type A airport transit visa and the applicable minimum coverage are not specified definitively in the central official source. The personalized checklist of the application location must be taken as a basis.
  • A Facilitated Transit Document and a Facilitated Rail Transit Document may be issued for travelers eligible for a special facilitated transit program. These documents are not issued at Lithuanian border crossing points.
  • The Facilitated Transit Document is issued upon application to a diplomatic or consular authority. The document is multiple-entry, may be valid for up to three years, and each transit within Lithuanian territory cannot exceed 24 hours.   • When traveling with facilitated transit documents, the traveler must carry a valid identity or travel document accepted by the program. Presentation of an invalid document or one not recognized by Lithuania, existence of an entry ban, or failure to meet application conditions may result in rejection or cancellation of the document.
