Visa-Free Entry Requirements

  • The traveler must carry the passport or travel document accepted under the visa exemption arrangement they benefit from and must not exceed the permitted duration of stay under the exemption. The passport type to which the exemption applies and the permitted duration are determined according to the relevant unilateral regulation or bilateral agreement.
  • The passport must be valid for the entire journey and be presented at border control. The universal minimum passport validity period, number of blank pages, return ticket, accommodation document, financial sufficiency, travel insurance, or vaccination certificate requirement for visa-free entry has not been definitively specified in the central official source. These documents may be requested depending on the traveler's situation or the examination at the point of entry.

E-Visa Application Requirements

  • The e-visa is the T-B3 tourist visa, issued only for tourist travel. Only a regular ordinary passport is accepted for the application. Temporary passports, emergency passports, official passports, and other passport types cannot be used for e-visa applications.
  • The passport must be valid for at least six months from the date of arrival in Laos. The passport must contain at least one blank page for the entry permit sticker and immigration stamp, and sufficient space for procedures on the return journey.
  • During the application, a color scan of the passport's biographical information page must be uploaded. The image must cover the entire page and the two-line machine-readable zone at the bottom of the page.
  • One 4 × 6 centimeter color photograph must be uploaded. The photograph must have been taken within the last six months, be shadowless, and have a plain white background. The applicant must look directly at the camera, have a neutral facial expression, and both eyes must be open.
  • After the email address is verified on the application portal, personal information, passport details, occupation, contact information, and travel details must be entered in English. After the information and documents are reviewed and submitted, the fee is paid online. Providing incorrect or incomplete information may result in a request for correction, delay, rejection, or denial of entry into the country. The competent authorities may request additional documents.
  • The fee is calculated according to the applicant's nationality as indicated in the passport. A single fee applicable to all applicants has not been published on the central page; the exact amount is shown after selecting the nationality on the official fee calculator. The bank transaction fee is not included in the calculated amount, and the e-visa fee is not refunded if the application is rejected, cancelled, or approved.
  • Payment can be made with Visa, MasterCard, JCB, American Express, WeChat Pay, Alipay, or UnionPay.
  • After receipt of a complete application and full payment, the normal processing time is three business days. Processing may take longer if the documents or information do not meet the acceptance criteria. Applications submitted after noon Laos local time may be processed the following day.
  • The planned date of arrival must not be more than 60 days from the date of application. The portal also states a system limitation that the application must be made at least five days before the planned arrival.
  • The e-visa is single-entry. The validity period of the approval letter is a maximum of 60 days from the date of issue. The maximum permitted duration of stay after entry into Laos is 30 days. The e-visa does not confer the right to engage in paid or unpaid work.
  • A separate visa is required for each traveler, including children and infants. The passport used for the application must be the same as the passport presented upon entry into the country.
  • The approved e-visa letter is sent by email. The traveler must carry a printed copy of the approval letter and present it to the immigration officer. A black-and-white printout is accepted, but the text and QR code must be legible. Displaying only the electronic image on a phone or other device is not sufficient.
  • The e-visa can only be used through Wattay International Airport, Lao–Thai Friendship Bridge I, Luang Prabang International Airport, Lao–Thai Friendship Bridge II, Pakse International Airport, Lao–Thai Friendship Bridge IV, Boten International Border Checkpoint, Boten Railway Station, and Khamsavath Railway Station. A different point of entry than that specified in the application may be used, but that point must be one of the nine authorized e-visa points of entry.
  • The e-visa approval does not automatically guarantee entry into the country. Border authorities compare the information in the passport and the approval letter. A determination that there are insufficient financial means to cover travel expenses may result in denial of entry. The minimum amount of money or the specific bank statement period required for this purpose has not been disclosed in the central official source.

Visa on Arrival Requirements

  • A visa on arrival can only be obtained at international airports and border checkpoints that provide this service. The traveler must check before travel that the point of entry they will use provides 'Visa on Arrival' service in the official border checkpoint directory. Not all border checkpoints issue visas on arrival.
  • The initial permitted stay with a visa on arrival is a maximum of 30 days. The general information from the Immigration Department states that this visa can be extended once within Laos.
  • An application with a valid passport must be made at border control. However, the universal passport validity period, number of blank pages, format of the application form, number and size of photographs, accommodation document, return or onward ticket, financial sufficiency document, travel insurance, fee amount, and accepted payment methods for the visa on arrival have not been definitively specified in the central official source.
  • Access to a visa on arrival may vary depending on the nationality indicated in the passport, the purpose of travel, and the point of entry. Applicants who are not eligible must obtain the visa in advance from a Lao diplomatic mission.

Consular Visa Application Requirements

  • A single centralized checklist of documents applicable to all countries has not been published for Lao diplomatic missions. The required documents may vary depending on the embassy or consulate where the application is made, the nationality indicated in the passport, the country of residence, the purpose of travel, and the type of visa requested.
  • The general checklist published by the Embassy of Laos in Washington requires a completed application form, two 2 × 2 inch photographs taken within the last six months, an original passport valid for at least six months, and a photocopy of the passport's personal information page.
  • For applications submitted by mail, a prepaid return envelope must be included. The Embassy in Washington requests the use of Priority Mail Express for applications from within the United States and DHL for applications from Canada. These postal rules apply only to the jurisdiction of the relevant mission.
  • At the Embassy in Washington, the fee is paid by money order or certified check, payable to the Embassy of the Lao People's Democratic Republic. This mission has published a fee of 50 US dollars for U.S. and Canadian citizens, and only a service fee of 10 US dollars for persons of Lao origin. An additional fee of 20 US dollars is charged for expedited processing. These amounts are not universal; the fees and payment methods of other missions may differ.
  • The normal processing time at the Embassy in Washington is ten business days from receipt of the application. The embassy states that the visas it issues are single-entry, must be used within two months from the date of issue, and provide a stay of 30 days from entry. The period of stay may be extended by the Lao Immigration Department. The processing time, usage period, and stay entitlement of a visa obtained from another mission may differ.
  • For non-tourism visas, the inviting organization, employer, investor, or project owner in Laos may need to carry out prior approval procedures. The official business visa process for investors and technical workers requires a company offer letter, investment or concession license, company registration certificate, tax registration certificate, and passport copies. For technical workers, a foreign worker quota and foreign employee employment approval may also be required. The documents may be subject to approval by the relevant investment unit, the Immigration Department, and the Consular Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
  • The universal blank passport page requirement, flight reservation, accommodation proof, bank statement, minimum balance, travel health insurance, fingerprints, interview, document translation, notarization, apostille, and documents for minors have not been definitively specified in the central official source for a consular visa. The relevant mission may request additional documents or an interview.

Transit Visa Requirements

  • The TR-B3 transit visa is a separate visa category available for foreigners and stateless persons transiting through Laos to another country. It must not be used for tourism, work, or other activities other than transit purposes.
  • The application channel, passport requirement, onward ticket, visa for the next country, photograph, fee, processing time, validity period of the visa, permitted duration of stay, and possibility of extension for a transit visa application have not been published as a detailed common checklist in current central official sources. Laos: Key Destinations

Vientiane serves as the capital and primary gateway for most visitors to Laos. Luang Prabang, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is another key arrival point via its international airport. These cities connect travelers to the country's rich cultural heritage.

Laos offers a blend of cultural and natural attractions, from the ancient temples of Luang Prabang to the karst landscapes of Vang Vieng. The Bolaven Plateau is known for its coffee plantations and waterfalls, while the Mekong River provides scenic river journeys. The southern region features the laid-back Four Thousand Islands.

Travelers often begin in Vientiane and head north to Vang Vieng and Luang Prabang, then continue by slow boat to Thailand or by road to northern Vietnam.
