Visa-Free Entry Requirements

  • Travelers benefiting from the Schengen short-stay visa exemption must carry a valid passport or another accepted travel document. The travel document must have been issued less than ten years ago and must be valid for at least three months beyond the planned departure from the Schengen area. The visa-free stay is limited to a maximum of 90 days in any 180-day period within the Schengen area.
  • At border control, a return or onward travel reservation, documents indicating the purpose of stay, hotel or other accommodation reservation, private accommodation invitation, sufficient means of subsistence, and documents supporting the intention to return to the country of residence may be requested. The amount taken as basis for financial sufficiency is at least 55 euros per person per day. This sufficiency can be proven by bank statements, traveler's cheques, cash, or a guarantee from a sponsor in the Netherlands.
  • Travel health insurance is not mandatory under central rules for visa-free travelers, but it is recommended. Visa waiver does not provide an automatic right of entry at the border; the traveler's purpose of travel, conditions of stay, financial sufficiency, and intention to depart in time may be checked by the border authorities.
  • For short-stay travelers covered by the European Entry/Exit System, passport information, facial image, and fingerprints, where applicable, may be recorded electronically at the Dutch border. Due to this process, a traditional entry or exit stamp may not be affixed to the passport.
  • The number of blank pages required in the passport for visa-free entry is not explicitly specified in the central official source. No additional central requirement applicable to all visa-free travelers has been published regarding a biometric passport, machine-readable passport, or a specific vaccination certificate.

Consular Visa Application Requirements — Short-stay Schengen visa

  • The applicant must complete the Schengen visa application form created in their own name on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' online portal, print it together with the unique application code, and sign it. A form created on behalf of another person must not be used.
  • The passport or other travel document must be less than ten years old, bear the holder's signature, contain at least two blank visa pages, and be valid for at least three months beyond the planned departure from the Schengen area. The passport photocopy pages required to be submitted for all applicants are not explicitly specified in the central common list. The checklist of the country of application may additionally request copies of the identity information page, previous visas, or used pages.
  • One color photograph must be submitted. The photograph must have been taken within the last six months, measure 35 × 45 millimeters, and have a white or light-colored background. For applications made through an external service center, a digital photograph may be taken during the appointment instead of a physical photograph. No universal file format or file size has been determined for a photograph file to be uploaded by the applicant.
  • Legal residence in the country of application must be proven. For this purpose, a valid passport, residence permit, visa, or work permit may be accepted. The residence permit may be required to be valid for at least three months after departure from the Schengen area. If the applicant is not a legal resident of the country of application, they must explain the reason why they cannot apply in the country of residence.
  • The applicant must demonstrate social or economic ties with the country of residence. For employees, a current employer letter or employment certificate showing job title, contract duration, and salary, together with bank statements or payslips for the previous three months, are requested. For self-employed persons, a business license or copy of income tax return and bank statements for the previous three months are required. Students must submit a current student certificate indicating the field of study and program duration. Depending on the situation, dependents, real estate ownership, or children's school enrollment may also be used as evidence of return ties.
  • For tourist accommodation, a hotel reservation or rental contract covering the entire travel period must be submitted. If the applicant owns property in the Netherlands, proof of ownership may be used. If staying with family or friends, a private accommodation and, if necessary, sponsorship form must be prepared.
  • A travel reservation issued in the applicant's name showing departure and return or entry to and exit from the Schengen area must be submitted. The ticket does not have to be fully paid before the application. For participants in organized tours, the tour reservation may be requested; for those traveling by rental car, a driver's license and rental agreement may be requested.
  • It must be indicated who will cover the travel and accommodation costs. If the applicant covers the costs, bank statements for the previous three months and, if employed, the last three payslips must be submitted. The general financial sufficiency criterion is at least 55 euros per person per day. The total amount required in the bank account varies according to the travel duration and other costs to be covered.
  • Travel health insurance issued in the applicant's name must be valid in all Schengen countries and for the entire duration of stay. The coverage must be at least 30,000 euros and include emergency medical treatment, hospitalization, prescription medication, and costs of medical repatriation to the country of residence, including in the event of death. For subsequent uses of a multiple-entry visa, proof of valid insurance for each trip must be carried. Exemptions regarding the insurance certificate may apply for diplomatic passport holders and certain seafarer applications.
  • If a person in the Netherlands will cover the costs, the sponsorship and/or private accommodation form must be used. For visa-required applications, the sponsor's signature must be certified by the Dutch municipality where the sponsor is registered. The visa application must be made within six months after the signature is certified. The sponsor must be at least 18 years old and have a regular, sufficient income.
  • An employed sponsor must submit an employment contract valid for at least 12 months from the date of application, a current employer declaration, the last three payslips, and a copy of a valid Dutch passport, identity card, or residence permit. A self-employed sponsor must submit a current trade register registration, the most recent final income tax assessment, a current profit and loss account, and a copy of identity or residence permit. A sponsor with pension or benefit income must prove that the income will continue for at least 12 more months. The sponsor's residence permit must cover the entire period of the visit.
  • For family or friend visit applications, a color copy of the inviting person's Dutch identity card or passport is required. If the inviting person is not a Dutch citizen, a valid Dutch residence permit must be submitted. The invitation must clearly indicate who will cover the accommodation and costs.
  • If a child under eighteen years of age travels without one or both parents or legal guardians, a current copy of the birth certificate and a consent form signed by the non-traveling parent or guardians are required. Additionally, signed and valid travel document copies of the non-traveling parents must be submitted. Depending on the situation, a death certificate of a parent, custody order, court permission, or legal guardianship document is requested.
  • During the application, documents and passport are submitted, travel-related questions are answered, and fingerprints are taken from applicants aged 12 and over. The requirement for personal appearance and whether previous biometric data can be reused may vary depending on the country and center where the application is made.
  • The standard adult short-stay Schengen visa fee is 90 euros. For children between six and eleven years of age, the fee is 45 euros; for children under six, it is free. A reduced fee of 35 euros may apply in certain visa facilitation cases. Exemptions may exist for students, researchers, certain teachers, representatives of non-profit organizations, and persons benefiting from visa facilitation. If the application is made through an external service provider, a separate service fee is charged in addition to the visa fee. Accepted payment methods vary depending on the country of application and the application center; no single central payment method is specified.
  • The application can normally be submitted no earlier than six months before travel. Seafarers may apply no earlier than nine months in advance.   • A single-entry visa grants one entry into the Schengen area. A multiple-entry visa permits multiple entries and exits for the duration of its validity. A single-entry visa may be valid for a maximum of 90 days, while a multiple-entry visa may be valid for up to five years in appropriate cases; the actual validity period granted depends on the assessment of the application and the dates on the visa sticker.
  • The processing authority may request additional documents, explanations, or an interview. There is no single central rule valid for all countries of application regarding translation, notarization, apostille, or consular legalization of documents. These procedures vary depending on the country of application, the country where the document was issued, the purpose of travel, and the checklist of the relevant representation.

Long-stay MVV Entry Visa

  • Persons who wish to live in the Netherlands for longer than 90 days and are subject to the MVV requirement apply for the MVV together with the related residence permit in the same procedure. The application is mostly made to the IND by the sponsor in the Netherlands. Persons without a sponsor or whose purpose of stay allows it may apply themselves through the Dutch embassy or consulate.
  • The application form, supporting documents, and fee vary according to the purpose of stay: employment, education, family reunification, entrepreneurship, or other. The document list generated by the IND after selecting the relevant purpose of stay must be used. There is no single universal list of financial sufficiency, insurance, bank statements, or marital status documents applicable to all MVV applicants.
  • If the applicant initiates the procedure directly at the representation, they must bring the completed application form, a passport-sized photograph, and a valid passport. Additional documents are specified in the relevant application form and on the purpose of stay page. Foreign official documents may need to be translated into Dutch, English, French, or German and, in some cases, legalized.
  • After the residence permit application is approved, an appointment must be made at the diplomatic representation indicated in the positive IND decision for the MVV sticker. If the application was made through a sponsor, generally a passport, a copy of the passport's photo personal information page, the IND positive decision letter or relevant registration number, and a document showing legal residence in the country of application are required.
  • When the MVV sticker is issued, the passport must be valid for at least six months from the appointment date and contain at least two blank pages. If the applicant is not a citizen of the country of application, a residence permit or comparable legal residence document and a copy thereof may be requested.
  • An appointment for the MVV sticker must, as a rule, be made within three months after receipt of the IND's positive decision letter. For certain procedures such as refugee family reunification, a six-month period may apply. The published processing time for the preparation of the MVV sticker is up to 10 working days. The processing time for the assessment of the residence permit application by the IND and the fee payable are determined separately according to the selected purpose of stay.
  • The MVV is a type D entry visa affixed to the passport and is personal. It is valid for 90 days from the date of issue. Travel to the Netherlands must take place within this period, and the residence permit must be collected from the IND. During the validity period and while the residence permit has not yet been collected, it permits multiple entries and exits.

Transit Visa Requirements

  • The airport transit visa applicant must print and submit the completed and signed transit visa application form together with other documents.
  • The passport or other travel document must be less than ten years old, contain at least two blank visa pages, bear the holder's signature, and be valid for at least three months after the planned departure from the Schengen area.

  • A flight or travel reservation issued in the applicant's name showing arrival in and departure from the Schengen area is required. The ticket does not have to be fully paid.
  • A valid passport, residence permit, or visa indicating that the applicant will be legally admitted to the country of destination after transit must be submitted. The permits required for entry into the final country of destination must be valid at the date of travel.
  • For applicants under eighteen years of age, if one or both parents do not travel, a current birth certificate, a parental consent form, and copies of the valid travel documents of the non-traveling parents are required. Depending on the situation, a death certificate, custody document, guardianship order, or court permission may be requested.
  • A transit visa only permits a short transfer in the international transit area of the Dutch airport. It does not permit passing through passport control or entering Dutch territory. If baggage collection, terminal change, or continuing on another Schengen flight requires passing through passport control, a short-stay Schengen visa may be required instead of a transit visa.
  • A transit visa application may be submitted no earlier than six months before travel. Seafarers may apply no earlier than nine months in advance. The current average processing time is 25 calendar days, and may extend to 45 calendar days in case of additional examination or document request.
  • The standard airport transit visa fee is 90 euros. For children between six and eleven years of age, it is 45 euros; for children under six, it is free. The service fee of the external application center is paid separately. The payment method varies depending on the country of application and the representation.
  • The dates during which the transit visa is valid and the number of permitted transits are indicated on the visa sticker. A fixed transit visa validity period applicable to all applications is not explicitly specified in the central official source.
