Tajikistan: Visa and entry documents and requirements

Visa-Free Entry Requirements
- The traveler must enter with a valid foreign passport or another international travel document accepted by Tajikistan.
- The visa-free stay period varies depending on the unilateral regulation applied, bilateral or multilateral agreement, passport type, and in some cases the travel itinerary. The traveler must leave Tajikistan before the granted period expires. For a longer stay, work, study, permanent residence, or any other purpose not covered by the visa-free arrangement, an appropriate visa must be obtained before travel.
- Foreigners entering visa-free must register with the competent units of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Tajikistan within ten business days from the date of entry, unless they are otherwise exempt under the relevant international agreement. Registration of diplomatic mission personnel is conducted through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. If staying in a hotel or another accommodation establishment, it should be confirmed whether the registration procedure is carried out by the accommodation establishment.
- The right to visa-free entry does not guarantee admission to the country. Entry may be refused due to failure to present the required document, provision of false information, previous immigration violations, or public order or security reasons.
E-Visa Application Requirements
- The e-visa application must be made online on the official e-visa portal. The applicant must fill out the electronic form, upload the required copy of the travel document, pay the application fee via an international electronic payment system, and receive the result by email. The application will not be processed without payment.
- The personal information provided in the application must be consistent with the information in the passport or other travel document. There should be no doubt about the authenticity and legibility of the uploaded travel document copy. As a rule, the passport or travel document must be valid for at least six more months.
- The passport or travel document image must be uploaded in JPEG format. PDF files are not accepted, and the uploaded file size must not exceed 1 MB.
- The current technical requirements displayed on the live application screen must be followed.
- The e-visa is issued for a validity period of 90 days and allows a maximum stay of 60 calendar days in the country within this period. The current central consular statement shows single-entry and multiple-entry e-visa options. The single-entry e-visa fee is 30 USD, and the multiple-entry e-visa fee is 50 USD.
- An applicant wishing to visit the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region or other special border areas must check the special permit option on the e-visa form. The total fee for this permit with a single-entry e-visa is 50 USD, and with a multiple-entry e-visa the total fee is 70 USD. The special area permit is entered on the issued electronic visa document.
- Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and UnionPay can be used for e-visa payments.
- The approved e-visa is sent to the applicant's email address in A4 format. The document must be printed and carried together with the passport or the travel document used throughout the journey. Since there is no clear central provision that a digital copy on the phone screen alone is sufficient, a printed document should be kept.
- The e-visa cannot be extended. Although older general legislation texts contain different wording regarding force majeure situations, the current specific e-visa explanation states that no extension is granted.
- E-visa holders are exempt from the foreign registration procedure at the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Tajikistan.
- The application should be completed sufficiently ahead of travel, considering processing time and possible technical delays.
- The e-visa should be used for short-term travel. For work, long-term study, permanent residence, or activities requiring a specific standard visa category, an appropriate visa must be obtained.
Visa on Arrival Requirements
- Visa on arrival is not a general system that can be purchased directly by arriving in the country without any prior procedure. The application must be made before travel via the official visa.gov.tj portal and undergo pre-assessment. The pre-approval or confirmation document sent by the system may be requested before boarding the flight and must be presented for visa issuance upon arrival.
- The visa on arrival procedure is carried out at the Consular Office at Dushanbe International Airport.
- The applicant must select the appropriate visa category on visa.gov.tj, fill out the electronic form, and upload the supporting documents required by the system. The list of documents varies by nationality, passport type, purpose of travel, and visa category.
- The passport must have at least two blank visa pages and must be valid for at least six months after the end of the planned travel to Tajikistan.
- For some visa categories, an invitation confirmation approved by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Tajikistan is required. The invitation confirmation may be issued in original or electronic form, and a copy is sent to the consular unit where the visa will be issued.
- The pre-approval document, passport, application documents, and the invitation or supporting documentation required for the relevant category must be carried during travel. Since there is no universal provision that presenting the document solely in digital form is sufficient, a printed copy should be kept.
- Additional fees or documents may be required depending on the visa category and the applicant's situation.
- The visa issued on arrival has the nature of a standard visa. The traveler must complete the foreign registration procedure within ten business days from the date of entry, unless exempted by international agreement.
- Obtaining pre-approval does not mean that the visa will be definitively issued or that entry to the country will be permitted. The consular and border authorities may request additional documents, explanations, or inspections.
Consular Visa Application Requirements
- The standard visa application must first be initiated electronically via the official visa.gov.tj portal. The applicant must select the appropriate visa category, fill out the form, and upload the required documents according to the category. After pre-assessment, an email is sent to the applicant and the necessary consular procedures are communicated.
- The passport must have at least two blank visa pages. The passport must be valid for at least six months after the end of the planned travel to Tajikistan.
- After receiving the pre-approval email, an appointment must be made at the relevant Tajikistan embassy or consulate. On the appointment day, the pre-approval letter, the original passport, and the originals or required copies of the documents uploaded to the online system must be submitted.
- The application form must be filled out online. The current local instructions of the mission being applied to must be followed.
- During the application, fingerprints are taken and a digital photo is taken at the consulate. Diplomats and children are exempt from the fingerprint procedure.
- The central page only states that a photo of appropriate size and quality belonging to the applicant may be required.
- The basic documents are the travel document, the application form filled out online and obtained from the system, a suitable photo, and the receipt showing payment of the official fee and consular fee. Additional documents are required depending on the category.
- A tourist visa is issued for tourism purposes and is not extendable. There are different standard visa categories for purposes of private visit, medical treatment, study, work, business, investment, press, religious activity, humanitarian aid, international transport, and permanent residence. The applicant must select the category that matches the actual purpose of travel.
- A business visa application requires a request from the inviting person or organization in Tajikistan. The business visa may be issued for the period indicated in the invitation request and, initially, for a maximum of three months.
- A special visa application for medical treatment requires a request from the healthcare institution in Tajikistan. For other private visits, a notification from the Passport and Registration Service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs may be required. In exceptional cases such as the death or serious illness of a relative who is a Tajik citizen, the application and a doctor-certified medical document may be accepted.
- For former Tajikistan citizens, a birth certificate issued by the competent Tajik authority is required; for family members or close relatives of a Tajikistan citizen, a document proving the family relationship is required. From certain young applicants whose parents are Tajikistan citizens, a birth certificate and copies of the parents' passports are required.
- For visa applications for a period longer than three months, an HIV/AIDS medical certificate from a competent healthcare institution in Tajikistan may be required. Diplomatic, service, investment, and humanitarian visa categories are excluded from this requirement.
- In categories requiring an invitation confirmation, the document is issued in the form determined by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and may be given to the applicant in original or electronic form. A fee of 10 USD per person is indicated for the invitation confirmation; for the examination of the visa request, a fee of 1 USD per person for natural persons and 2 USD per person for legal entities is indicated.
- Standard visa fees may vary depending on the visa category, validity period, number of entries, the mission applied to, and reciprocity arrangements. The payment method is determined according to the instructions of the relevant mission.
- After the application is concluded, the visa fee must be paid according to the selected category and the passport must, as a rule, be collected in person.
- The processing of the visa application is normally a maximum of 20 business days from the date all required documents are submitted. In cases requiring detailed examination, the period may be extended by a maximum of 10 additional business days. International agreements or special visa categories may provide for a different period.
- A standard visa may be issued as single-entry or multiple-entry. A single-entry visa grants one entry and exit during the period specified in the visa. A multiple-entry visa allows multiple entries and exits within the visa validity period. The validity period of the visa and the permitted duration of stay in the country are determined by the category and the records on the issued visa.
- Visa holders must register with the competent units of the Ministry of Internal Affairs within ten business days from entry into Tajikistan, unless an international agreement or special exemption applies.
- The requirements for translation of documents, notarization, apostille, or consular legalization vary depending on the visa category, the country where the document was issued, and the mission applied to.
- The consular authority may call the applicant for an additional interview, request additional documents, or take the application for more detailed examination. Pre-approval or an issued visa does not guarantee admission to the country.
Transit Visa Requirements
- A transit visa is issued for travelers passing through Tajikistan territory by air or land to a third country. The general transit visa duration is a maximum of 72 hours.
- A traveler who remains only in the transit zone at the international airport, does not pass through state border control, and continues their journey to a third country does not need a transit visa. If baggage collection, terminal change, exit from the airport, or passage through border control is required, a transit visa or another entry status may be necessary.
- If the flight cannot be operated for more than 24 hours due to an earthquake, flood, or similar force majeure reasons, transit passengers may be placed in a hotel without a visa until the situation returns to normal.
- For transit by land, the visa is issued according to the time required for transit on the shortest route. The calculation is based on a road distance of 400 kilometers per day.
- The applicant must have a valid visa for the final country of travel. If a visa is not required for the final country, this document is not sought. A multiple-entry transit visa may be issued if the traveler has a multiple-entry visa for the final country or if a visa is not required for travel to that country.
- The transit visa application must be initiated on visa.gov.tj. Under the standard visa procedure, the passport must have at least two blank pages and be valid for at least six months after the end of travel. The applicant must go to the relevant mission with the passport and supporting documents after pre-approval.
- An onward ticket or confirmed transportation reservation, along with a visa or other document showing the right to enter the final destination country, may be requested to verify the transit route. For land travel, the planned route and border crossing points may also be reported.
- The general standard visa processing time, unless a different specific time is indicated, is a maximum of 20 business days from the complete application and may be extended by 10 business days if necessary.
