Ecuador: Visa Requirements
Visa requirements may change. Always verify the latest information through official government sources.
Visa-Free Entry Requirements
- The passenger must present a valid passport or travel document accepted by Ecuador. The passport must be valid for at least six more months on the date of entry into the country. An exception may apply for emergency passports and travel documents subject to special international regulations.
- Passengers accepted under valid international or regional agreements may enter with a national identity document recognized and valid by Ecuador, instead of a passport. The application of this possibility depends on the type of identity document used and the relevant international regulation.
- Entry into and exit from the country must be carried out only at immigration control points at officially authorized airports, ports, or land border crossings. The passenger must present their travel document to the officer, provide the information requested for entry registration, and answer questions from the immigration officer regarding the purpose of travel, place of stay, or planned duration of stay.
- The normal permitted duration of stay in tourist status is a maximum of 90 days within a one-year period calculated from the date of first entry. The stay may be extended once for a maximum of 90 consecutive additional days, provided that the application is made and the relevant fee is paid before the current permitted stay expires.
- Tourist status does not grant the right to work, provide paid services, or carry out income-generating economic activities in Ecuador. A switch to the appropriate immigration status or visa category is required for such activities.
- If a foreign child or minor passenger is traveling alone, authorization from the person or persons exercising parental authority or a document issued by an authority considered competent under the legislation of the country of origin may be requested. The information of the person accompanying the child or responsible for the child in the country, as well as the place of stay, may be recorded in the entry registration.
- There is no general yellow fever vaccination certificate requirement for entry into Ecuador. Persons traveling to risk areas in the Amazon basin are advised to get vaccinated at least ten days before travel. Passengers showing symptoms of illness upon entry may be asked to fill out a health declaration or undergo a health assessment.
- For visa-free tourist entry, a return or onward ticket, hotel reservation, a fixed amount of financial solvency, and travel health insurance are not specified as generally required documents at the central level for all passengers.
- The number of blank pages required in the passport is not definitively specified in the central official source.
- The fixed amount to be shown for financial solvency and the period to be covered by the bank statement are not definitively specified in the central official source.
- Travel health insurance and the minimum coverage amount of the insurance are not definitively specified in the central official source.
- A separate application fee and official processing time for the visa-free entry procedure are not definitively specified in the central official source.
E-Visa Application Requirements
- The tourist e-visa application is made entirely online through the e-VISAS platform of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Human Mobility of Ecuador. The applicant must create an account with a valid email address, use the verification code sent, set a password, and register their personal information in the system.
- The applicant must start a new visa process, indicate whether they are applying for themselves, their legal representative, or on behalf of a minor, and select the temporary visitor tourist visa. Personal information, contact details, the type of request, and a brief description of the application must be fully entered in the electronic form.
- A passport or accepted travel document valid for at least six months on the date of entry into the country must be submitted in the application. The passport information must be correctly transferred to the electronic form.
- The pages of the passport to be scanned and the number of blank pages required in the passport are not definitively specified in the central official source.
- One recent color digital photograph must be uploaded to the application. The photograph must be in JPG format, with a maximum size of 1 MB, and dimensions of 5 x 5 cm or 2 x 2 inches. The background must be white, the applicant must look directly at the camera, both eyes must be open, and preferably a neutral facial expression or a natural smile should be used. The maximum number of months before which the photograph must have been taken is not definitively specified in the central official source.
- Applicants over eighteen years of age must submit criminal record certificates obtained from their country of citizenship and from countries where they have resided in the last five years. The documents must be no older than 180 days from the date of issuance. Documents issued in countries with a federal structure must cover the entire country.
- The criminal record certificate and other foreign official documents must be apostilled or legalized when required. Documents not in Spanish must be translated into Spanish. Different verification rules may apply to foreign private documents bearing an electronic signature. Private documents not bearing an electronic signature may be required to be notarized and, when necessary, undergo apostille or legalization.
- The planned travel itinerary and a return or onward ticket showing exit from Ecuador must be attached to the application.
- The applicant must demonstrate financial means equivalent to at least one Unified Basic Wage in effect on the application date, per applicant and per planned month of stay. Financial solvency may be proven by a bank statement, credit card limit certificate, a tour package payment receipt covering all travel expenses, or a sponsorship letter from a sponsor residing in Ecuador stating that they will cover the expenses.
- The fixed number of months to be covered by the bank statement for the tourist e-visa is not definitively specified in the central official source.
- If a sponsor covers the expenses, documents showing the sponsor's residence in Ecuador, identity, and financial solvency may be requested. The sponsorship letter must clearly state that the applicant's travel and stay expenses are being covered.
- Minors, persons with disabilities, persons over 65 years of age, and spouses or registered partners who cannot demonstrate their own financial solvency may use the financial documents of the legal representative, parent, guardian, spouse, or the person on whom they are economically dependent.
- If the application is made from within Ecuador, the applicant must prove that they are in regular immigration status with a valid tourist stay permit or a valid visa. If the application is made from a consular jurisdiction of Ecuador in another country and the applicant is not a citizen of that country, a document showing their regular residence or legal status in that country may be requested.
- Applications on behalf of minors must be made by the legal representative or authorized agent. A uniform list of birth certificates, parental consent forms, or custody documents to be requested from all children for the tourist e-visa is not definitively specified in the central official source. The competent authority may request additional documents proving family ties or representation authority depending on the travel conditions.
- The application review fee is 50 USD. If the visa is approved, an additional issuance fee of 30 USD is paid. Value added tax is not applied to these amounts.
- Payment can be made by online credit or debit card, or through Banco del Pacífico. Bank payments are processed during the bank's business hours. If the first payment generated on the electronic application page is not completed by 23.55 Ecuador time on the same day, the application may be deleted from the system.
- The general legal period for a decision on the visa application is 60 business days. The process may be extended if there are missing documents, additional documents are requested, an interview is conducted, or the authenticity of a document is investigated.
- The competent authority may request additional documents or explanations from the applicant and, if deemed necessary, summon the applicant for an interview. Mandatory fingerprinting or biometric data processing for all tourist e-visa applications is not definitively specified in the central official source.
- The permitted duration of stay with a tourist visa is 90 days from the date of entry into the country. An extension of up to 90 consecutive additional days may be requested by carrying out the appropriate extension procedure before the current permitted stay expires.
- The tourist e-visa cannot be used for the purpose of work, paid service, or income-generating activity.
- The approved visa is generated electronically, and the electronic document may contain a QR code and barcode for verification purposes. A strict requirement regarding whether the electronic visa must be carried in printed form or shown only in digital format is not specified in the central official source.

Ecuador: Key Destinations
Ecuador's capital, Quito, sits high in the Andes and is the primary gateway for international travelers. The historic center is a UNESCO World Heritage site, while the modern city offers museums and dining. Guayaquil, the largest city and economic hub, serves as the main port and a key arrival point for visitors exploring the Pacific coast.
The Galápagos Islands are a world-renowned destination for wildlife and natural history, accessible from both Quito and Guayaquil. The Andean highlands feature indigenous markets, colonial towns like Cuenca, and the active Cotopaxi volcano. The Amazon basin and Pacific beaches offer diverse ecosystems for travelers.
Most itineraries begin in Quito or Guayaquil, with domestic flights connecting to the Galápagos, the Amazon, and coastal destinations. Overland routes link the highlands, and travelers often combine a few days in the capital with a trip to the islands or the southern city of Cuenca.
